Was Just Offered Ellsbury in this Deal -- Do it?

Postby sigriffey » Wed Apr 28, 2010 4:29 pm

I was just sent an offer:

Ellsbury and Rafael Soriano for Greinke and Magglio Ordonez

it's tempting to have an OF of Sizemore, Crawford and Ellsbury (if Sizemore EVER gets it going again)

Closers would be Soria, Fuentes, Soriano ... so I would have a chance to win that category often now.

Rotation would then be: Halladay, CC, Ubaldo, Liriano, Lilly, Garcia

12 Team H2H League with 6 keepers (a * means the 3-year keeper contract expires after this year -- most of the studs expire in our league after this season)

9 x 9 categories (R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, AVG -- IP, CG, W, L, ER, ERA, K, SV, WHIP)

MY TEAM (if a recent trade goes through):

C Brian McCann*
1B Albert Pujols*
2B Chase Utley*
3B Alex Rodriguez*
SS Jason Bartlett
OF Carl Crawford
OF Grady Sizemore
OF Magglio Ordonez
UT Alberto Callaspo
UT Jason Kubel
UT James Loney
BN Julio Borbon

SP Roy Halladay*
SP CC Sabathia*
SP Zach Greinke
SP Ubaldo Jimenez
SP Francisco Liriano
SP Ted Lilly
SP Derek Lowe
SP Jaime Garcia

RP Joakim Soria
RP Brian Fuentes

I definitely wouldn't do it. The fact that you have Crawford (and, to a lesser extent, Sizemore) makes Ellsbury redundant. While starting pitching is certainly a position of strength for you to deal from, Greinke/Halladay/Sabathia are all going to help out in multiple pitching categories, Ellsbury will help you in a few, but ones you have a good chance of winning anyways, with all the speedy guys you have. By the way, this is a 12 team league??? Your team is ridiculous.

You could use more saves I suppose, so see if he won't just cut the deal down to Ordonez for Soriano.

Believe it or not, but my team has been hitting around .220 for two weeks now and I had 2 SB last week and only 2 this week. Also thinking keeperwise it would be great to carry Ellsbury and Crawford into next year.

Should I shoot to get Kendry Morales instead?

Yes i would try to either get a top closer. Your hitting will come around you have 2 of the top 3 picks in fantasy and your top 3 pitchers are sick.

No telling how long Ellsbury will be out and things don't seem good at the moment for a quick recovery. So he wouldn't help out your current situation. And the loss of Ordonez will only make it worse. Your hitting will come around. So if it is more of a move for next year, then I would do it. But maybe a little early to be planning so far ahead. Still have this season to win.

Can you explain how this is possible? Are you playing with a group of donkeys, because it's remarkable that they were able to figure out a keyboard. How many carrots did these treasures cost?

I would stand where you currently reside. Ellsbury does little for you with the team speed already in your possession. But it doesn't really matter anyway since not even a team of Ivy League fantasy baseball scholars (let alone donkeys) can make up for the blackhole of talent your roster creates for the rest of the league.

Lots of trades ... trades where I probably gave up a lot (overpaid) but came out with the best player in the deal and then made savvy waiver moves to build around these guys.... Been a work in progress.

So you really think I should stand pat?
