Not knowing much about the outfield in the Bronx, can someone fill me in? Is he competing with Randy Winn for playing time. Looking at his splits he hits more versus righties which seems like it might work in his favor. I was looking to grab a different SB guy in a 5 OF league I am in and was looking at him.

I believe it's Thames to gets starts against LHP over Gardner. However, if you're looking for a guy who is going to steal a boatload of bases and seemingly hit for pretty good average, you could do a whole lot worse, even if he only plays 120 games.

Thames is so bad in the outfield that as soon as the LHP comes out of the game, Gardner trots out to left. I'm an unfortunate Javy Vazquez owner and on Sunday Thames turned an easy lineout into a double. 97% of all leftfielders would have caught this ball. This made me realize that Gardner's at bats are very safe.

i've been pleased w/ him so far, it's pretty reliable when he'll play for weekly matchups. I sort of wonder why teams that have guys w/ handedness issues don't get their best lefty/righty to pitch BP to the guys until they get the hang of it? The lefties'd have to toss some pitches on their off days anyway. The Chavez/Zito combo on the A's was when I started thinking of that, maybe 2003 or so?

Has he changed his approach at the plate to make more contact?

in the minors he was a 20-ish % K rate hitter
2009 - 16%
2010 - 10% - albeit tiny sample

Because I was going to say that he wasn't going to hit for average based on his minors K rate (kind of like Michael Bourn who is so far defying the BAPIP gods). But even if he ends up with a K rate near his '09 season he should have a decent average (and a good average if can manage a 10-13% K rate).

His .340 BABIP is bolstering that average a touch right now. I know fast players tend to lean towards higher BABIPs, but he was only at a .311 clip last season. Seeing a rise in BB% and a fall in K% is a nice thing in the early going for his owners, though. Even when he bats 9th in that lineup he's got Jeter on deck behind him, so he's going to see pitches to hit. The guy scored 48 Runs in 248 AB a season ago and has already scored 12 times this year. If he's able to chip into Thames' ABs and get some starts here and there against lesser LHP, he'll be an elite source of speed (maybe even the MLB SB leader), with a decent to plus average and a solid contributor in Runs. Throw 30 - 40 RBI in there and you've got a fantastic option in the OF given what you paid for him.

Gardner actually started against Gio and Dallas Braden, so the Yankees are at least thinking about him against LHP. I don't see them carrying Thames for much longer given his "prowess" in the field.

Thames is still going to get AB's against LHP as long as he is hitting .538/.600/1.523 against them. As far as Gardner he is on pace to get about 460 AB and steal 77 bases in just those 460 AB. I would guess he ends the season with 450-500 AB, and around 40 SB though he has the upside to get to 60. His BA last year was .270 and he's hititng .296 right now, I'd guess he ends the year in the .280's. One thing about Gardner is that each time he has gone up a level he has struggled at first but then in his 2nd year at the same level he has made the adjustments and improved significantly. Also, there has been some speculation swirling that Gardner could stay in the 2-hole even when Nick Johnson is playing again. Girardi loves Gardner and if he can keep his OBP in the .380's he is probably a better fit in the 2-hole at least for the time being.

Brett!! You stud. 2-3 so far today with his 1st HR. I think I can safely say this is dedicated to Brett from all his owners who drafted him or picked him up as the last of the OFers projected for 25+ SB's and single digit HR's :

Grabbed this guy off the wire early on to replace Ellsbury. He's really making me forget about Jacoby. !+)
