I've always wondered, what's a "Habs?"

It's short for "Habanero," the spicy pepper popular amongst the Mexican French population in Montreal. After the French were kicked out of Mexico by Pizzaro they relocated in Montreal, and brought their love for spicy fajitas with them. Habaneros are as ingrained into the culture of Montreal as the baguette.

This is also why their uniforms prominently feature red - spicy like a chili.

Habs is short for "habitants". In French Habitant is a resident or occupant.

When the French first colonized Quebec they used the seigneurial system. The land along the St. Laurent was broken up into Seigneuries ruled by a Seigneur or Lord. And individual plots along the river were handed out to peasants who were called Habitants b/c they occupied the land. So Habitants or Habs were the proletariat of Quebec history.
