Looking for saves?

Postby Surfs up » Sun Apr 25, 2010 11:28 pm

I was just offered Berkman and Rivera for Josh Johnson and Adam Dunn.
Rivera can't be kept after this year. Johnson has another year left after this year . I drafted Dunn I the second round .
I have pretty decent power in Albert, Holliday, Miggy , Utley and Wright. Berkman wouldn't be that much of a drop off from Dunn. My pitching is solid. I have Halladay. Gallardo, Liriano, Pettitte, Penny, Porcello, Braden and Cliff Lee. My only other closer now is Wagner with Frasor having lost his job and stinking up the joint.Lee is on my DL and I 'll have to drop Frasor to make room for Lee. I'm in dead last in saves but in first place in my league by 6 points. I could pass on the trade and just go the rest of the way with one closer and have 9 starters getting me four catagories and basiscally punt saves. Thoughts ?

It is still early in the season. While you have a 6 point lead now, that doesn't mean you will at the end of the season.

I would probably do the trade because M.Rivera is the best and plays on a team that wins a lot.

J.Johnson only has a year left. Johnson as been kinda soft this year, but does hold good potential.

Are there any Free Agent closers available at all in your League?

No free agent closers on the wire. I think my main concern is the power loss from Dunn. He is just about a lock for 35-40 hrs and 100 rbi.Seems to be coming out of his funk. Berkman is a great hitter but starting to go the other way.

I just did some looking at last years saves. First place won the saves with 121. I was dead last with 11.I was looking ata maybe a trade with the owner of Heath Bell. I didn't look to see what Bell was projected to do but assuming he gets 35. He already has something like 4 that leaves about 31 saves. Wagner ismy only closer and he is projected to get about 28 saves. Thats about 59-60 saves between them. Looking at last year 65 saves was good for 9th place . Thats only about 2-3 points I can move up getting one more closer. I'm not going to trade two starters to get two closers. I get more points from starters.So you see its not worth it to me to give up a potential 40 hrs and 100 rbi and a guy like Johnson just for two or three points.
Anymore thoughts?

yeah you cant do that. giving up josh for saves is overpaying way too much unless ur staff is absolutely loaded. target cheaper relievers, bcuz usually those elite closers are only going to be dealt if you overpay and most of the time it is not worth it in a redraft.

help with mine?

I think I would do it. Dunn and Berkman are basically a wash and your pitching is deep enough that you can afford to lose Johnson.
League Setup:
13 Team Points League
6 Hitters 3 Pitchers (Positions don't matter)
1B = 1, 2B = 2, 3B = 3, HR = 4, RBI = 1
Win = 12, Save = 5

I also have Halladay, Gallardo, Cliff Lee Porcello, Braden , Liriano and Penny. I offered Porcello to the owner of Heath Bell but he rejected. I then offered him Braden but got no reply so I assume thats also a NO. He also has Rodney and Trevor Hoffman .I don't trust Rodney even if he does keep the closers job.Rivera cannot be kept after this year. I'm thinking of trying Gallardo straight up for Rivera. YG scares me. He still walks too many hitters.But again one more closer really only gets me a couple of points in the standings. I am 4 saves behind the 11th place owner now. Maybe time to think punt saves.

Half thinking of Gallardo for Raffy Soriano . He needs pitching bad. Doubt he will do it.Who are some other closers you would trade Gallardo for?

I looked over a couple of teams needing pitching. This is what I came up with .
Gallardo ( Instead of Johnson ) for Rivera straight up
Gallardo for Raffy Soriano
Braden for Valerde
Gallardo for Bell
Still thinking of gambling on Rodney by offering Porcello or Braden. He won't take either for Bell.
Thoughts on these?
