Scherzer- where are the K's?

Anybody watch Scherzer and notice any trend that explains why he isn't K'ng like he should be?

We were debating this last week during one of his games in the individual game-thread... but it's got me scratching my head as well.

The only real obvious thing that stuck out was how many times the KC batters were fouling off his pitches. I don't know if it was hitter-specific because of the fact that they were seeing him for the second time in a week, or if he just isn't getting the movement on his ball that was giving him so many swings-and-misses last year.

It's entirely possible that now that video is out on him there's some tells in his delivery and hitters are getting the speed of his pitches down quicker. Or... maybe... we're all over-reacting and it's just his first couple of starts and he'll start racking them up by the truckload like we were all hoping.

He had 174 Ks in 170 IP last year, about a K an inning. It's not even the end of April. He has 17 Ks in 24 IP in only 4 starts.

well...he did go from the NL to the AL, so instead of facing pitchers he faces a DH

I guess you guys haven't been paying attention. He has 11 Ks in 13 IP over his last 2 starts, including 7 Ks in 7 IP in his last start. Could have just been a slow start to the year his first 2 starts. The league shift could have some effect given he's not going to be striking out pitchers.

Eh, I didn't get to watch any of the game today, but I think it seems obvious that something is different about him this season, and it's not just facing a DH.

4.1 IP, 8 H, 10 ER, 4 BB and only 1 K... even a wild Scherzer with decent stuff would be getting more than 1 out of 13 outs by strikeout. This looks a lot more like he's throwing BP fastballs.

I don't know if it's becasuse it still early in the season and he hasn't built his muscles up or something but according to fangraphs the velocity on all his pitches is down by 2 MPH... I'm gonna have to keep a close eye on him for the next few weeks and decide what i'm going to do with him then..

I'm thinking that trying to pitch with a missing eyeball might have something to do with it....

Decided to drop him for now, hasn't impressed me too much so far and I had another need... But with the potential always there and the strike out capability, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on him.

Kinda coming late to the party, but I dropped him after he gave up 10 ER in 2 or 3 IP at the beginning of this week. I know the MLB Gameday stats aren't perfect, but his fastball reading never came in over 91 MPH, with an average around 89.5 MPH...ouch.
