Trade advice

Postby jjyank » Tue Apr 20, 2010 7:48 am

This is my first real crack at fantasy baseball, and I got my first trade proposal last night. My league is a 10 team Roto, and these are the scoring categories for hitting: AVG, R, SB, HR, RBI ... and pitching: ERA, WHIP, SV, K, W

Here is my roster:

C: Victor Martinez
1B: Albert Pujols
2B: Ian Stewart
3B: Michael Young
SS: Troy Tulowitzki
2B/SS: Yunel Escobar
1B/3B: Carlos Pena
OF: Curtis Granderson, Andre Ethier, Raul Ibanez, Nolan Reimold, Jason Kubel
UTIL: Juan Rivera
Bench: Nick Johnson, Colby Rasmus, Miguel Tejada
Pitchers: CC Sabathia, Javy Vasquez, Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Rafael Soriano, David Price, Bobby Jenks, Mark Buerhrle, Scott Downs

The proposed trade would be for me to send Tulowitzki, Kubel, and Rivera to a team a few places behind me in the league. In return, I get Alcides Escobar, Adam Jones, and Alfonso Soriano. My initial reaction is definitely no. I would be downgrading at shortstop for what I feel like is a negligible upgrade in my OF. I took a closer look at his roster, and his outfield also includes Grady Sizemore, Shin-Soo Choo, and Carl Crawford. Dustin Pedrioa is his 2B, another position I could use an upgrade at, if I am able to alter the trade.

Since I'm new to fantasy baseball, I'd like some advice on my first trade proposal. Am I right in that this does not seem like a good trade for me? If so, how can I make it one that is?

You are right. This is a pretty awful trade. The other manager is trying to get you into selling low on Tulo and you shouldnt fall for it.

If he wants Tulo, he must at least start by giving you back a sizemore/pedroia type player and more!!

You can try to counter him, but if he really thinks that the trade he offered was even close to being fair value it's going to be hard to get a deal done. Hopefully he was just trying to start a dialogue with you.

Tulo is an elite player at what is probably the shallowest position, you probably shouldn't even trade him but if you do it had better be for a hell of a lot more than that crap he sent over

Yeah, thats what I thought, thanks for the help. Based on my roster though, would you recommend making some type of move? I have a surplus at 1B I think and could potentially make my outfield better. Any thoughts?
