Pickup and General Team Advice

Postby NWilli » Sun Apr 18, 2010 2:43 pm

Hey guys, first time on the forum here, and this is my first year playing fantasy baseball. We had an auction draft, and I pretty much ended up with the team below. 5x5 head to head scoring, 10 team league. Here's my squad.

C Russell Martin, LAD C
1B Ryan Howard, Phi 1B
2B Clint Barmes, Col 2B
3B David Wright, NYM 3B
SS Orlando Cabrera, Cin SS
2B/SS Everth Cabrera, SD SS
1B/3B Derrek Lee, ChC 1B S
OF Matt Kemp, LAD OF
OF Jacoby Ellsbury, Bos OF
OF Jayson Werth, Phi OF
OF Carlos Lee, Hou OF S
OF Garrett Jones, Pit 1B, OF
UTIL Magglio Ordonez, Det OF, DH

Bench Mike Napoli, LAA C
Bench Scott Sizemore, Det 2B
Bench Austin Jackson, Det OF

P Dan Haren, Ari SP
P Justin Verlander, Det SP
P Adam Wainwright, StL SP
P Javier Vazquez, NYY SP
P Hiroki Kuroda, LAD SP
P Jonathan Broxton, LAD RP
P Brian Wilson, SF RP
P Billy Wagner, Atl RP
P Octavio Dotel, Pit RP

DL Ted Lilly*, ChC SP

First of all, what do we think of my team? I think I did pretty well, but I've got a glaring weakness at all of my MI spots.

Next, who would you drop? I am going to drop Napoli because he's not playing, but there's some pretty good free agents I don't want to miss out on, so I'm thinking about dropping Barmes or Sizemore. Thoughts?

Here are some notable available FA's:

Batters:
Rajai Davis
James Loney
Juan Rivera
Chris Young
Casey McGehee
Scott Podsednik
Josh Willingham
Delmon Young
Alex Gonzalez
Drew Stubbs
David Freese

Pitchers:
Jonathon Sanchez
Bronson Arroyo
Brandon Webb
Kerry Wood
Frank Francisco
Joe Blanton
Jason Fraser
Ben Sheets
Ricky Romero
Ryan Madson

There are many more, so feel free to make suggestions of players that are generally available in leagues.

We do an auction Waiver system, and I've got $97 out of $100 left. I'm bidding $5 for Loney, and $1 for Gonzalez and McGehee (the only player that would be dropped is Napoli right now, so I can only get one of the three). Are these good moves? What else should I do?

If you got this far, thanks for reading, and any advice would be really appreciated!

I am by NO MEANS AN EXPERT. If this were my team, I would pick up Romero and Sanchez for SP. Pick up Willingham, McGehee and maybe Rivera. Dropping is much hArder. I would try to package Lee, Kuroda, Magglio, Barnes somehow for whatever. But I like picking up the guys mentioned over any of the guys to trade. I wouldnt drop Lee or Magglio outright.

Pretty solid team. Your pitching should be fine when lily gets back depending on how many starters people in your league use per week (I prefer six or seven). With the people you are trying to pick up... I like mcgehee, he should have a jump in rbi's batting after fielder/braun but I don't know if his power is going to stay at the pace its going at. If you can get him go for it.
