I'm guessing they all came back from cancer, but I don't remember Bo having to do that. I remember he came back from a degenerative hip to play. Tony Saunders came back from a broken arm too.

They came back from all sorts of things... But why does this list begin in '91? Why is there one entry per year? What was named for who?

In a sense, this all (sadly) started with a Jack Hamilton fastball...

There are only two Boston Red Sox sluggers I can think of from the era besides Yaz. Ted Williams, who ended his career in 1960, and
Tony Conigliaro, about whom I know nothing except that he played for the Sox and ended up hitting some dingers.

So, umm.... is it Tony C?

Does anyone remember the picture of Tony C that appeared in the paper? I have a copy of that picture somewhere, not the original newspaper photo, I will have to dig that out. I remember to his comeback and later the trade that ripped everyones heart out when they sent him to the Angels.

Yes, these players were the yearly winners of the Tony Conigliaro Award, established in 1991, the year after Tony C died. This may well be the least-known award in baseball, which seems like a shame.
