During an appearance on MLB Home Plate on Sirius XM on Wednesday, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said that Jimmy Rollins has "between a 2 and 1 degree" calf strain that will require a stint on the disabled list.

"He's definitely going to be out some time," Manuel told Jim Duquette and Kevin Kennedy. "How much, I don't know, but he's hurt pretty bad." Manuel used the word "tear" to describe the injury, so it's safe to say the Phillies will be without Rollins for at least two weeks, perhaps even longer. Rollins was placed on the 15-day DL with a torn calf muscle and will miss two to four weeks, the team's official web site reports.

Wilson Valdez was called up to take his place. It sounds like Rollins may not return until the middle of May.

Rollins said he was feeling considerably better on Wednesday, two days after an MRI examination revealed he had between a Grade 1 and 2 tear in his right calf muscle, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

Team physician Michael Ciccotti told Rollins he will likely miss between two and four weeks. "That's what they tell everybody for everything these days - two to four weeks," Rollins said. "But between today and Monday, it's much better. It's not even comparable to the way it felt. So if things continue to progress the way they have over the last 48 hours, hopefully it will be just two weeks." Rollins is eligible to come off the disabled list April 28. Juan Castro will be the starter at short while Rollins is out with Wilson Valdez backing him up.
