Sandoval and Butler trade

Postby ramble2 » Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:54 pm

I'm looking for advice on (i) whether I ought to pursue this trade; and (ii) if so, how I should do it.

One of my league mates is interested in trading me Sandoval for Butler in some kind of package deal. He thinks Sandoval is worth more than Butler. It's a 5x5 keeper league, and Butler and Sandoval cost the same to keep. Sandoval does have 1B, 3B eligibility, which is nice. I'd like something a bit more steady and secure at 3B (I just traded Cueto for Headley to help shore up my 3B a little bit).

I'm thinking of offering Butler + Hawpe for Sandoval + C. Young (who was just picked up off ww and would be a very cheap keeper). Should I be targeting another of his players instead? Am I offering too much? Too little? Should I even be considering moving Butler for Sandoval? Thanks!

My roster:
C Posada
1B M. Cabrera
2B Phillips
3B C. Davis
SS Jeter
OF Hunter
OF C. Gonzalez
OF Pence
UT Butler
BN Beltran, Hawpe, BJ Upton, LaPorta, Headley

SP Lincecum
SP J. Johnson (FLO)
SP Slowey
RP Soria
RP R. Soriano
RP C. Perez
P Hudson
P Liriano
P C. Young
BN Strasburg, Jaime Garcia, J. Johnson (BAL)

His team:
C: Soto
1B: Sandoval
2B: K. Johnson
3B: Wright
SS: Rollins
OF: Bay
OF: Ellsbury
OF: Stubbs
UT: LaRoche
BN: C. Young, Soriano, S. Sizemore, Everth Cabrera

SP: Hamels, Billingsley, Penny, Lowe, Buchholz, Braden, Sheets, Lackey, Harang
RP: Hoffman, Aardsma, Rodney, Wood

We do have similar teams...I am also looking to get pablo...On that note, I think it's fair to deal those, but honestly, dealing butler straight up for Pablo would be fair, IMO. All boils down to if you really want young or Hawpe.

I wouldn't want Young OR Hawpe. That said, I WOULD take Pablo over Butler. 3B is nice, plus I think he's a little bit better on offense. They're not dissimilar enough though to warrant much of a throw in. I almost wonder if the trade is worth doing since I doubt he'll accept something fair. The Young/Hawpe thing is a wash...though Young has more upside.

I like that deal for you. Your 3B needs help and you don't really need Butler and Hawpe doesn't have much (if any) keeper value especially considering Rockies crowded young OF talent. Young isn't terrible but not worth much either. But I do value Sandoval over Butler, so I would take it.

I like the idea of moving Butler for Sandoval. IMO Sandoval is more valuable in both the short and long terms. I would offer the trade you suggest, and see what he comes back with.

Thanks for the help on mine!

Thanks everyone! I offered Butler & Hawpe for Sandoval & Young. Now it's wait and see ...

I'm reviving this post because I'm still in negotiations. I'd really like to get Sandoval, because I think he'll shore up my 3B (though I've since added Headley, which helps). With my strong SP, good-enough RP to get me enough saves to land in the top third (I hope), and well-rounded offense I think I can make a run at the league this year while shoring up strength for the future.

Butler/Hawpe for Sandoval/Young is still on the table, and still something I'd be happy to do.
I've also offered Butler/Pence for Sandoval/Young+Draft Pick. I'm not a big Pence fan, I do like Young, and would love to grab a draft pick out of this deal.
He came back and offered Sandoval/Ellsbury for Butler/Carlos Gonzalez+Draft Pick. I'm not very inclined to do this, although it's worth noting that Ellsbury would only cost me a 13th round pick next year.

My guess is that he's starting to panic a little on Ellsbury. Frankly, I tend to think he's a bit over-rated myself, and would much rather have Gonzalez in my lineup. That said, what do you think about a Butler/Pence for Sandoval/Ellsbury trade? It would leave my starting lineup looking like:

C: Posada
1B: Cabrera
2B: Phillips
3B: Sandoval [Replacing Headley, who moves to the Bench]
SS: Jeter
OF: Tori Hunter, Carlos Gonzalez, BJ Upton
UT: Ellsbury [Replacing Butler]

I think that's still a win for me, even if it costs me a few HRs. I'd still rather have Young + a draft pick. What do you think?

I don't mind the Sandoval/Ellsbury for Butler/Pence. If he goes for it, I think I would do it.

I am with you. Definitely do not do the trade giving up Car-Go. Love Car-go and he is off to a nice start.

Butler/Hawpe for Sandoval and Young? if that's on the table still, make the trade

Depending on the draft pick, I like the Ellsbury deal too. Only cost you a 13th rounder for him? Why would he give him up?

I'd love to take Butler/Hawpe for Sandoval/Young! However, I may have not been clear - I sent him that offer but he hasn't accepted it. He's thinking about it, but also trying to work out something else. I'm trying to push the Butler/Hawpe for Sandoval/Young, because that's the most attractive deal IMO. I'm looking for advice on what other deals I might make in lieu of that one.
