Nolasco is aiming to walk 25 batters or less this season, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports. Recommendation: "Obviously, I want to be as low as possible, but walks are going to happen," he said. "It's part of the game, part of being a pitcher. My goal is no more than 25 walks. I want to throw over 200 innings. I think 25 is a good number to be at." Only six pitchers have accomplished that feat since 1980, and even Greg Maddux managed to do it just twice...
I know its just talk, but the man is on the record. I like a little Hubris from my starters, anyway
In 2008 he gave out 42 walks in 212 innings. His control has always been good, but this is rarified air indeed. I think if anyone does it this year it will be Doc. I think Nolasco bottoms out around 40 again. Do you think he has a chance?
I would say it's probably out of reach. Nolasco has looked great tonight but still has 2 walks. If he plans on making 30+ starts, 25 walks is nearly unattainable. Especially considering he can work late into games. Late in games, fatigue catches up and you are bound to walk some extra guys here and there late.
Joel Pineiro came close last season so I wouldn't say it's totally impossible, but it won't happen. Even the guys with pin point control (Halladay, Haren, Maddux) struggle to walk under 30 guys in a year

Bret Saberhagen once had 13 walks in 177 IP and with 13 home runs allowed. It is pretty impressive when walks=home runs.
"I do not think baseball of today is any better than it was 30 years ago... I still think Radbourne is the greatest of the pitchers." John Sullivan 1914-Old athletes never change.

In 198 innings in 2007, Greg Maddux at age 40, walked just 25 batters. In 2001 he walked 27 in 233 IP. In '97 he walked 20 in 232.2. '96 28 in 245. '95 23 in 209.2.

Yeah, that year was ridiculous. In 2003, he had 20 walks in 213 IP. If I remember correctly, it took him like 6 starts to walk his first batter.
