The Kemp Shaft Continues in 2010?

Postby Montana168 » Mon Apr 05, 2010 11:29 am

the dodger lineup today is

furcal
r martin
ethier
manny
kemp
loney

everyone assumed kemp was going to be hitting in the 2 spot in front of ethier and manny in order to utilize his speed and get the dodgers best hitter the most AB possible, yet still in a run producing (sort of, even tho the 3 spot is more ideal for kemp) position.

as most of you all know, torre had kemp in the bottom 3 spots in the lineup for way too many AB's last yr which frustrated many of his owners because the best hitter belongs in the middle/top of the order. the 5 spot is still a run producing spot, but the 5 spot will not allow him to steal 30+ bases like he is capable of. what is torre thinking? i know it is only day 1, but we saw this lineup shuffling last yr, and it worked to get to the playoffs, but this yr they dont have the pitching depth to make up for not scoring enough runs. kemp should be in the 2 hole, or in the 3 hole and push ethier/manny down the lineup.

makes no sense?! does this piss anyone else off like it does to me?!

As a Dodger fan I'd be more inclined to look on the positive side of this, this could be just the protection Manny needs to give him the hot start I think he'll need to carry him thru the season.

LOL @ Jussell Martin batting 2nd, after playing like a dog in 2009 and coming off a groin injury.

I agree but still think you could give him just as much protection moving Ethier down to 5 and slotting Kemp 3 to take advantage of his speed.

I just can't believe they're only batting 6 guys.

Well maybe this is the way Kemp gets more ABs.

Dude it's called NL "strategy". After those 6 hitters, the pitcher bats three times.
That's why the Nancy League is better apparently ;-7

Is there any reason other than SB's for Kemp to Ethier and Manny down the lineup? here's a newsflash but Kemp isn't the best hitter in the Dodgers lineup and probably not the 2nd best.

Having him in the 5th spot takes advantage of his power and minimizes the effect of his low-ish BB rate. The only part that doesn't make sense is Martin in the 2 spot unless the coaching staff saw the 2008 version in camp. Then he's ideal in the 2 spot.
