Gio Gonzalez - The A's 5th Starter

Postby Bosy Billups » Sat Apr 03, 2010 9:55 pm

Just earned it.

Remember folks, this guy was once a huge prospect. And he brings the K's. Add that into a pitcher's park, and I think we are about to see some real Gallardo like numbers and a potential breakout.

Watch out for this guy. Just a warning in advance. He is legit.

Thoughts?

Gotta get those walks under control. At least he's heading in the right direction, but I don't see a Gallardo breakout coming. Worth a stash and hold in a deep league imo, until you see if he continues his progression with his control.

Well, I'll have to pay attention a little closer I guess.

In 98.2 IP last year, Gio Gonzalez struckout 23.9% of batters and walked 12.3%

There were only 3 100+ IP SP's that struckout 23%+ with a walk rate around 12% or higher, and they are:

Pitcher '09 K/BF	'09 BB/BF
Clayton Kershaw 26.1% 13.0%
Jonathan Sanchez 24.7% 12.7%
Yovani Gallardo 25.7% 11.9%

Might be a nice call on your part ;-D

I'd wager he ends up to be as good as Brett Anderson this year. ;-D

Interesting. Been watching him.

Only have one spot available, and currently have I. Kennedy there. The upside is there with Gio, but I think Kennedy might be steadier.

I'm drinking the Kool Aid. I think Gio is going to have a stellar year. He needs to keep his composure on the mound. His biggest problem in the past has been above the shoulders, having a tendency to get flustered if he doesn't get a call his way. He's maturing and is learning to calm himself down. It showed in todays game. Horrible 1st inning, 30 pitches, walking the bases loaded. Got out of the inning and then turned into a strike machine, K'ing 7 in 5 innings. Gave up the two run homer to Bowker but struck out the next batter. He's learning to stay inside himself and not let the game get out of hand.

I love him for K/9.
Wins and ratios could be problematic, though he's certainly worth a watch.

I've have been and still am intrigued by him obviously because of the K/9 and the park, but I expect him to be too much of a headache to bear with. Kind of reminds me of Oliver Perez.
