Trade Help

Postby Mateo de Lorenzo » Fri Apr 02, 2010 1:12 am

OK, so I am in a standard 5x5 roto league with keepers. The keeper rules are as follows. I am allowed an unlimited amount of sleepers during the season, but cannot go over 15 contract years. However, at the end of the season I can have no more than 7 keepers and 15 contract years. When a keeper is chosen, the team looses a draft pick equal to the round they were drafted at. For multi year deals, you lose a draft pick three rounds earlier for each subsequent year. So if a team drafted Jason Heyward in the 25h round and choose to keep him for three years, I would lose a 25th round pick, 22nd rounder and a 19th rounder in the next three drafts.

So here is my situation. This may get pretty long, so I hope you are down for some reading, but I need advice. :)

First, I was offered Cliff Lee for Jayson Werth. Jayson Werth is one of my keepers with good keeper value costing me a 14th round pick in 2011 and an 11th round pick in 2012. Cliff Lee is not a keeper, so I can configure any contract I wish for him, but it would cost me my first round draft pick every year I choose to keep him (and I already lose my first rounder, so it would cause me to also lose my second rounder).

So, I am wondering if I should ask for more.

My team:

C Kurt Suzuki
1B Michael Cuddyer
2B Dan Uggla
3B Jorge Cantu
SS Alcides Escobar
MI Asdrubal Cabrera
CI James Loney
OF Ryan Braun
OF Jayson Werth
OF Carl Crawford
OF Rajai Davis
OF Will Venable
U Placido Polanco

SP Brett Anderson
SP Josh Beckett
SP Mark Buehrle
SP Edwin Jackson
SP Mat Latos
SP Vicente Padilla
SP Joel Piniero
RP Andrew Bailey
RP Jonathan Broxton
BN: Brad Penny, David Price, Chris Ianetta
DL: Joe Nathan
Minors: Mat Gamel, Dee Gordon

So, I am pretty content with my starting pitching, though I could use one more closer. But I think I can get a little more for Werth because of his keeper value.

Here is the other roster, so the forum can give input:

C Russell Martin
1B Kendry Morales
2B Brian Roberts
3B Ryan Zimmerman
SS Hanley Ramirez
MI Jason Bartlett
CI Kevin Youkilis
OF Johnny Damon
OF Tony Gwynn
OF Torii Hunter
OF Nyjer Morgan
OF Alfonos Soriano
U Nick Johnson

SP Matt Garza
SP Josh Johnson
SP Jair Jurrjens
SP John Lackey
SP Derek Lowe
SP Jeff Niemann
RP David Aardsma
RP Bobby Jenks
RP Chad Qualls

BN: Juan Uribe, Brandon Wood, Wade Davis, Cliff Lee
Minors: Domonic Brown, Michael Stanton

So, I guess I am mainly wondering if asking for the inclusion of Brandon Wood would be too much to ask for as I do like his potential, especially as a keeper.

To further to this, I have been approached by another team asking if I would be willing to trade Josh Beckett to them. The prospect of possibly picking up Lee would make me more willing to part with Beckett. The email inquiring about Beckett asked me what I wanted for him, suggesting Carlos Santana and somebody else. (I spoke to them earlier about acquiring Santana before I traded for Suzuki, so I am not as keen on needing a catcher now. So, any suggestions on who to ask for from the team asking for Beckett? Here is their roster:

C Victor Martinez
1B Mark Teixeria
2B Rickie Weeks
3B Evan Longoria
SS Stephen Drew
MI Ian Stewart
CI Derek Lee
OF Nelson Cruz
OF Jacoby Ellsbury
OF Carlos Gonzalez
OF Lastings Milledge
OF BJ Upton
U Vladimir Guerrero

SP Jorge de la Rosa
SP Gavin Floyd
SP Clayton Kershaw
SP Tim Lincecum
SP Jake Peavy
SP Randy Wolf
RP Daniel Bard
RP Chris Perez
RP Joakim Soria

BN: Orlando Cabrera, Michael Brantley, Franklin Morales
Minors: Carlos Santana, Jeremy Hellickson

So, the way I look at it is each trade is dependent on one another for it to make sense to me. For the second portion involving Beckett, I feel I should get an OFer to make up my loss of Werth. I like Carlos Gonzalez and Jacoby Ellsbury, but Gonzalez would not be eligible to be kept and Ellsbury would be mine through next year, costing me a fourth rounder. I would also I also like the possibility of picking up Chris Perez as a closer. But Carlos Gonzalez and Chris Perez doesn't seem fair to me for Josh Beckett and I am not sure if Jacoby Ellsbury/Chris Perez is fair to him.

The bottom line I am looking at is this: Cliff Lee is at least equivalent to Josh Beckett. So, I need to replace Werth in any potential trade. Carlos Gonzalez has potential but if he doesn't perform this year, I can't keep him. Ellsbury will likely be better than Werth and I get him one more year but lose a 4th rounder instead of a 14th rounder next year. Perez, if included would bolster my saves and RP positional stats and help a in WHIP/ERA.

So, in essence, we are talking Werth for Ellsbury and Perez (assuming the other team OKS)

A last note: The trade of Lee for Werth would be held as pending until after Cliff Lee's suspension, so that isn't a factor.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated as I would like to get these deals ironed out if they are going to happen. I told one party I would try to have an answer within the next few days.

that's a lot of stuff to process...but if i understand correctly i wouldn't do the werth for lee trade i don't think..cuz having to give up a 1st and 2nd wouldn't be worth it...especially with the value you get from werth.

If there is a way to get ellsbury though i would go that route because a 4th round pick would be pretty fair value for a guy like that.

Thanks for the quick reply. Greatly appreciated. As for the losing a first and second rounder, I would only lose both if I chose to keep Lee as a keeper at the end of the season.

So here is another question. With my team as is, if I could trade Beckett for Ellsbury, would that be a good deal? Would it be too much for me to ask for Chris Perez to be included?

if i, or the person i trade him to, were to make him a keeper before next years draft, it would cost a fourth rounder in 2010 and a first rounder any year beyond that.

so pretty much the same as ellsbury. if i can swing perez in a deal i would lose a 24th rounder next year if i choose to keep him.
