Trade help WHIR - McCutchen

Postby MaudDib » Thu Apr 01, 2010 8:08 pm

I play in a deep 10 team Dynasty points league where we have 35 man rosters and 20 man minor league rosters. I really like McCutchen and could see him being a Carl Crawford type player as early as next year. Here is the offer I have received but make sure to look at my roster before answering.

I have been offered McCutchen for Billy Butler, Alcides Escobar and Colby Rasmus.

At the surface this looks like a bad trade. But here is my roster

C - Weiters, Soto
1B - Pujols, Votto, Bulter
2B - Pedroia
SS - Tulo, Alcides, Ian Desmond
3B - Longoria
OF - Bruce, Sizemore, Kemp, Hamilton, Rajia Davis, BJ Upton, Rasmus and Snider

SP - Kershaw, Felix, Wainwright, Price, Anderson, Gallardo, Nolasco, Matusz
RP - Broxton, Capps, Fuentes

Minor League - Smoak, Morrison, Castro, Tim Beckham, Jesus Montero, Alvarez, Grant Green and Wilmor Flores

As you can see I have a lot of depth. Smoak and Morrison both could be up in the next year as well as Castro and Green. Butler will have to out produce Votto for my Util spot and Escobar is probably a back up if Tulo gets hurt. Rasmus could be a good hitter and has shown improvement but McCutchen is clearly better.

Thoughs? I know I am paying a lot and possibly too much but I think my team can handle the loss and could be better with McCutchen but I want to know if I am missing something.

...and as always WHIR.

Don't like it. I'm not high on McCutchen and think he is over-rated. I like the deal if you drop Escobar and ship off Butler/Rasmus. You trading him now will bite you in the ass next . If you want to trade him, have the guy throw in a tier 2/3 pitcher.

But like I said, Im not a McCutchen fan

In some circles, Butler should net you McCutchen by himself. But seeing your depth and the desire to throw in your lineup the best talent you can, I think you maybe take this deal to give you that extra dimension day in and day out. I just wish you could get one more player or try it just for Butler/Rasmus first...

I would definitely try to get another toss in player for your side, but if not I do it... I know you can't just 'cancel' players out, but with your roster Butler's value to YOU isn't high hardly at all given your amazing depth at 1B, given that it turns into Escobar/Rasmus for McCutchen which is winner winner chicken dinner... Still TRY to get another player because overall value you give up a TON...

Help me out...

Honestly, I just believe it's too much to give up. You do have a lot of good depth, and I'm a Mccutchen fan, but I also love Butler and Rasmus too. In my opinion, they have as much upside as a McCutchen. By the way, that's an insanely deep league you're in.

Help me out man?

I like McCutchen, but not enough to justify trading Butler + 2 other guys to get him.

I have to ask - Why is trading bench depth for an upgrade at OF a bad move? I realize that it is over paying but the odds are none of those guys will ever play for me. Maybe Rasmus beats out Bruce, Hamilton and Upton. I am having a hard time with this trade so I am looking for more than I am paying to much only because I see it as me trading 3 bench players for a starter.

But I do appreciate all the responses so far, I am just looking for more clarification.

Thanks again.

I think you can get a better deal for those 3. Aside from the speed Butler has more upside as a hitter. I like the fact your trading bench depth for a starter, I'm just not that high on Dread Pirate.
Here's the pitch on the way, a swing and a belt! Left field! Way back! BLUE JAYS WIN!
