I have been offered Kevin Youkilis & Andre Ethier for Jacoby Ellsbury & Joey Votto Do you think I should do this or pass on it?
My Roster is:
C- Matt Wieters 1B- Albert Pujols 2B- Aaron Hill SS- Elvis Andrus 3B- Chipper Jones OF- Jacoby Ellsbury Nick Markakis Ryan Ludwick Michael Bourn Vernon Wells U -- Brian Roberts Joey Votto B -- Everth Cabrera Chase Headley -- Conner Jackson Cody Ross
SP -- CC Sabathia Tommy Hansen Jair Jurgens John Danks J.A. Happ Kevin Slowey
RP -- Mariano Rivera Billy Wagner Jose Valverde
I am leaning toward NOT doing this trade but Youkilis sounds better at 3rd then Jones to me and Ethier could provide more power in my outfield which I think I need. However, I really like Votto as a Utility guy playing every day and Ellsbury could help with steals. Help Me, I'm having a lot of trouble with this one.
I wouldn't do it, at first glance I thought 'ok maybe'. But that was because I was thinking Ethier would help your OF situation, but heck your giving up an OFer in the deal, so thats kind of a mute point. Youk would be an upgrade over Jones at 3B, but I'm expecting Chipper to come back this year with a nice bounce back type of year. Also loosing Votto is big because I think you could potentially be caring 2 top 5-6 1B with Pujols and Joey by the end of the year.
Youk would be the only gain in the deal, your OF position would stay mute and you would lose a big time power bat at your Util.
I don't mind that deal too much in terms of your exisiting lineup, but really, from a draft position analysis you are getting hosed. You are giving up 2 legit second round picks for a third round pick (Youkilis) and a 7-8th round pick (Either).

I am passing on this deal...I like the Ellsbury/Votto side too much.
To me Youk-Votto is pretty much a wash.
I do think you need to upgrade your outfield, but you are trading one of your better OF, to get in my opinion a weaker one. (they offer different things I know).
Pass on this one you can do much better for your roster.

The obvious question with this trade is whether you can afford to give up the steals. With Roberts, Bourn, and Andrus, I think you easily can afford it (depending on how many people are in your league, I'm guessing about 10 from the looks of it).
Now that we're past that, is this a good value trade? The answer there is no. Votto and Youkilis are roughly a push. Ellsbury is going dozens of picks ahead of Ethier. I think you should consider a trade like this to pick up a more reliable 3B, moving Chipper to the Util spot where it is easier to find a quality fill-in. But I would need someone more like a Grady Sizemore or Matt Holliday rather than Ethier to feel like I wasn't leaving chips on the table.
I would not do this deal!!!! im telling you ellsbury will hit 18+ homers this year with 70_ steals, and votto is legit. i love youk especially since im from boston but i think he has hit his ceiling and either is good and still may have growth room but otehr are too valuable.

Says who? Joe Maddon? Ellsbury will never have a 20-homer season, ever.
I am going to buck the trend and say that I would do the deal.
Let's look at this for a second. What does Ellsbury provide? Steals and that is about it. Sure, he gives a LOT of steals, but it is only steals. You have Bourn and Roberts. Granted there are a LOT of question marks on roberts; however, if he can come back, you are set for steals. Whether you win the category by one steal or 50, it is still the same. Thus, I don't see Ellsbury having much value for you.
Votto. I think he is going to be GREAT this yea and that is a tough pill to swallow no doubt. However, let's look at what you get. You get Youkilis. Nothing pretty but very consistent. PLUS, he is an upgrade over Jones. Yes, I agree that Jones should have a bit of a bounce back season; however, he is getting up in years, has not had more than 130 games for many years now and has even had some minor problems in spring training. If he were in the AL and could DH, I would be more inclined to believe he would play more games. However, having to play the field means he will not play more than 130 games IMO. Also, he is well known for being a last second scratch, thus screwing over your lineup. Can be very frustrating. Finally, there is NOTHING for 3rd basemen should Chipper fail for you. You can replace a 1st baseman and Outfielder, but not a 3rd baseman.
Ethier will have a good season. He proved last year that he is an all-around help. I think this is fairly even and given that you won't need steals and you are taking some risks at 3rd base with Chipper, I would do the deal. It is a tough call though.

Ellsbury also gives you 100-110 runs and a pretty solid average (.290, .300+ if he turns those flyballs into line drives). Runs tend to be the one category that goes underrated but can be a mountain to climb after the first few months if you fall behind. There's the extra value in Ellsbury. BTW, Roberts' SB total has declined the last few years and while I think he steals 30-35 bags, he is a bit of a risk for being sunken value, more so than Ellsbury.
As for the trade, I don't think it's the best value. I still like Votto over Youkilis only because he gives a little more HR and BA upside. I believe your team could use some power and it's not a bad idea to deal one of your 2B, SS, and/or one of your outfielders for a big bat or two. Ellsbury isn't a bad chip to be using in deals because he's your most valuable OF, but you might not be maximizing the best value out of him in settling for Ethier. Try making a run at say, Holliday, Justin Upton, maybe even Braun or Kemp with Ellsbury as a key part of the trade. The other thing is, if you're dealing Ellsbury in a roto, you are letting go of a big part of your SB cushion.
