This will be the league's 7th year. 12 team 5x5 roto mixed redraft, 27 rds. Everything is standard to Yahoo except CI and MI positions which were added two years ago, so infield bats tend to go quick.

There are 3 new managers taking up the challenge this year: SWCarter, Sticky Spice and TenBagger

Previous Seasons:
2009: 1st: AKHomebrewer - 95.5 pts, 2nd: daullaz - 90 pts, 3rd: bleach168 - 82 pts
2008: 1st: NZF - 113.5 pts, 2nd: bleach168 - 78 pts, 3rd: Tribe-Fan - 77 pts
2007: 1st: NZF - 92.5 pts, 2nd: bleach168 - 83.5 pts, 3rd: MrMarley - 77 pts
2006: 1st: bleach168 - 93.5 pts, 2nd: Mustangs989 - 87.5 pts, 3rd: NZF - 86.5 pts
2005: 1st: Kolbsaves - 91.5 pts, 2nd: NZF - 86 pts, 3rd: Mustangs989 - 86 pts
2004: 1st: Erboes - 100 pts, 2nd: Cornbread Maxwell - 83 pts, 3rd: Pedantic - 78.5 pts

Just eyeballing it, HalfMassed, Scooter, Bleach, Sticky Spice and Kolb seemed to have had the best drafts. Halfmassed actually had to autodraft since he couldn't get into the draft applet. Bleach said he almost had the same problem up until 2 min to go. We almost never have autodrafters (and had a few this year), so I wouldn't be surprised if others had the same problem. Anyone else out there have/had issues with live-drafting on Yahoo lately?

Re: Cafe Challenge 2010

Postby mrmarley » Mon Mar 29, 2010 11:12 pm

My recap:

We knew our draft slots ahead of time, so I did a mock and took Hanley at #2, then figured I'd have either my choice or leftovers with A-Gon or Votto in the 2nd rd. It threw me off when both of those guys were picked before it got to me.

As a backup plan, I went with Pedroia. Since we have the extra IF spots, I think he's still a decent pick, but I really would have rather had AGon's HR's there (or Votto's power/avg).

I continued as mocked with Zimmerman in the 3rd ( probably would have gone Sandoval for his avg if I had planned for my team to be hurting in avg due to my later picks).

I was very happy to find Haren still there at the end of the 4th after the mini-run on SP's, then started trying to make up missing power with Granderson while still getting some speed as my 1st OF in the 5th. I had planned on going Markakis, but needed Granderson's extra HR's. Hoping he keeps up the HRs like he did last year.

Pretty happy Dunn fell to the late 6th since I was still trying to make up power, but my team avg took a nosedive after those 5th and 6th picks.

I wanted one of Nolasco or Hamels for my #2 since I thought there was a dropoff after those guys. I had to reach in the early 8th round for Nolasco since I was fairly sure they would both go in the next 20 picks.

Took Bell as my 1st RP in the 8th (6th RP off the board) and Torii Hunter in the 9th. Considered Mclouth, but was trying to make up avg at this point. Didn't matter, since Mclouth fell back to me at the end of the 10th.

The rest of the draft was spent drafting a couple more closers in Mike Gonzalez & Ryan Franklin, middle relievers in Greggerson, Mike Adams, Jason Motte (handcuffing my #1 and #3 closers), Saito & Howell. I rounded out my staff with Harden, Slowey & Hudson.

Wish I had picked one of the mid-round speedy OFers and a better CI than Beltre, but maybe Trû will come back this year.

All in all, I feel decent about the draft, but other than one 3rd place finish, I've never finished above 5th in this of now though, there is still hope for this year. :-)

Well, this is my 2nd year in the league, finished a decent 4th last year. It was a somewhat disappointing finish because I came out the first half of the season in a solid top-2 position, but my team faded.

I looked back at where I was lacking, and after Santana went down last year, I had no one besides Gallardo that struck anyone out. I definitely went after that this year, going after Verlander (269 K in '09) and Lester (225), then coming with Garza (189) and Scherzer (174) too. Even Wolf and Blanton had decent K totals last year in the 160s (debatable if that can be repeated, but still).

I figured Braun at 5 would be a near-lock (I mean, look at my avatar), but I did not expect Justin Upton in the 2nd with a group of drafters like this. Maybe I like him more than most, I don't know. I didn't like starting OF-OF in a 6 IF - 3 OF league, but I just went best available (IMO) rather than positionally. If Manny Ramirez can eke out another classic Manny-type season, my Braun/Upton/ManRam OF could be killer.

Ultimately I'm just hoping for good health. I have a number of injury risks in Berkman, Weeks, Chipper, and Glaus that I'll be relying on, and my depth behind them could flop given the upside-type guys I went with on my bench (Snider, S. Sizemore, A. Jackson).

I agree the addition of the MI-CI slots starting last year has somewhat skewed draft behavior relative to the traditional 8-positions + util setup. Indeed, Scooter, your Upton pick came in part because after debating between him and Tulo earlier in the second, I came down on the side of the SS, hoping he can replicate last year's four good months.

A title repeat looks like a longshot, what with '09 roster staples Pujols, ARod and Longoria all having disappeared before my first pick. But my pitching looks better than it did coming out of the draft a year ago, and hopefully my plethora of dubious closing candidates can out-save last season's duo of Jenks and Ryan. !+)

Should be fun ... always a battle here.

Re: Cafe Challenge 2010

My offensive lineup is old and unexciting -- Russel Martin, Michael Young, David Ortiz, Orlando Cabrera, Jason Bay (who really slipped...Shin Soo Choo was taken before him :-? )Johnny Damon, and Vlad all start for my team. Ordonez and Konerko off the bench. If I could teleport to 2 or 3 years ago, that would be great.

To counterbalance this fairly well known and solid offense, I have a lot of question marks at pitching: Vazquez in NYY, possible comebacks from Lidge, Webb, Liriano, and Colby Lewis, and a couple young guns in Masterson and Matusz. I prefer to go upside on pitching, as I'm confident I can pluck at least a couple decent guys from the waivers as the year rolls on.

Shrug. I think I did an alright job, but the proof will be in the pudding.

I was one of the guys unable to get in and was Auto-Drafted. I hadn't preranked andything because I was sure I was able to be at the draft. Wasn't thinking about not being able to get in, I've drafted 4 leagues and haven't had a problem yet. Not real happy with my team. I was the team that took Choo before Bay. Gonna need to be on my toes this season to have a shot at getting above 6th place. :~( :-/

just for s&g, i thought rookie & cream's draft tracker did a decent job of projecting the season out last yr based on the draft alone, at least in picking 3 of the top 5 finishers and 2 of the bottom 3. I'm sure my first two picks of reyes and beltran hurt my actual results compared to the projections:

Pts Team Rank Rank Pts
95.5 AKHomebrewer 1 3 77
90.0 daullaz 2 6 73
82.0 bleach168 3 8 70
75.0 Scooter1027 4 2 89
69.5 MrMarley 5 1 104
68.5 KolbSaves 6 10 55
65.5 Big Lebowski 7 9 57
63.0 NZF 8 5 74

49.5 Tribe-Fan 10 11 55
36.5 RAmst23 11 7 73
29.0 Kingctb27 12 12 55

Put the starting lineups into this year's draft tracker...and bleach leads the pack, what a shock !+)

Sweet numbers, marley. :-D

I was woefully unprepared coming into this year. I am ashamed to admit that there were quite a few players I hadn't done any research on. I used R&C's MDP to try to get an idea of what to expect.

0. Drank 4 cups of coffee.
1. (9) Evan Longoria - Thought about taking Lincecum here.
2. (16) Joe Mauer - I'm big on position scarcity
3. (33) Félix Hernández - I always invest heavily in starting pitching.
4. (40) Zack Greinke - Surprised he was still here. This league tends to go pitching heavy.
5. (57) Adam Wainwright - I didn't like anyone else and had no problem taking my third SP.
6. (64) Andre Ethier
7. (81) Adam Jones
8. (88) Dan Uggla - No upside here but at least you know what you're going to get. Mauer's BA affords me the cushion needed to take guys like Uggla.
9. (105) Elvis Andrus - With an MI position to worry about, I value these guys a little higher and Andrus is my first speed guy.
10. (112) Francisco Cordero
11. (129) John Lackey - Not a big Lackey fan, but I think he's a little undervalued.
12. (136) Carlos Quentin - Had to pull the trigger on him. I almost took him earlier but didn't want a third OF just yet knowing I needed to take speedy OF'ers later on.
13. (153) Chris Davis - I'm a sucker for his upside. His great spring has clearly influenced my decision here when it really shouldn't have.
14. (160) Bobby Jenks - Why is Jenks valued so low this year? He's pretty steady and that's a closer's most valuable trait.
15. (177) Nyjer Morgan - Surprised to see him available and I needed his speed.
16. (184) Juan Pierre - See above.
17. (201) Garrett Jones - Check out his splits. Has platoon written all over him.
18. (208) Kerry Wood
19. (225) Plácido Polanco
20. (232) Dexter Fowler
21. (249) Alex Gordon
22. (256) Aroldis Chapman
23. (273) Nick Johnson
24. (280) Orlando Hudson
25. (297) Andy Pettitte
26. (304) Russell Branyan - Do you have a guy who hit 31 homers in 431 ABs last year who recently moved to a better hitter's park on your waiver wire? I don't. :-b
27. (321) Joba Chamberlain

I'm going to platoon 1B, CI and UTIL to begin the year. I like that my team is really young and quite a few players could seriously outperform their draft positions. I don't like that most of my pitchers are AL pitchers.

In the 6 years I have played in this league I have leared it is a tough road. I have a 3rd and 2-4th place finishes and a couple bottom of the pack finishes.

This year my plan was to take some solid guys early (Utley, A. Gonzalez, Reynolds, CC) and then take more than a few chances. I think one needs to hit on a few guys like that to win this thing. So I loaded up on high upside guys (Butler, Hamilton, Strasburg), youth that could be poised for a big jump forward (Perez, LaPorta, Blanks, McGehee, C. Santata) and a bunch of reclamation projects that could possibly see another day in the sun (Soriano, Hafner, Matsui, Bradley).

I left some guys in the queue a little too long missing out on Quentin, Pierre, and Andrus all a round before I was going to draft them. But that is to be expected with this bunch of managers.

2 things about in-season management......there is no such thing as waiting on a guy on the wire. If he has potential or is "hot", another manager will have grabbed him hours earlier. But the upside of that is we can use that as tips for other leagues. I always check the wire in my cafe league to get some ideas.

Plus everyone plays to the bell in this league, which I love.

Looking forward to another tough season.

Eternal vigilance is the price of integrity.
