Should I get Cordero and Pena?

Postby steaksammich » Sat Mar 27, 2010 3:11 pm

I'd get Carlos Pena (22) and Francisco Cordero (29) and I would give Chris Perez (1), Michael Young (10), Jason Kubel (11), and Mike Trout (M). Currently Young is slated for a bench role and the deal would put Pena at my CI and move Cuddyer to Kubel's spot in the OF. Cordero would be taking Perez's spot at RP.

It's a 5X5 auction league with 5 guys kept every year. We also have a minor league system which is where Mike Trout, an Angels prospect, comes from. The prices in parenthesis are what they went for this year and for next year they can be kept at this year's price + 5. The owner of Pena and Cordero had a lot of cash to spend in the middle of the auction and over spent for those two guys making them bad keepers for next year. Perez, on the other hand, could be a cheap closer for a couple of years if he keeps the job after Wood gets back.

I could also get Derrek Lee in place of Pena or give Carlos Gonzalez in place of Kubel.

be much easier if we had a full roster to look at...

Based on value and what you have said, I would take the deal yes you add a lot of $$$, but you also add a ton of value to your roster. Do I think Cordero is worth $29? Hell no, but do I think that his save total that will most likely be on the plus side of 25 more then Perez is worth it? Yes. Pena is the best player in the deal and Cordero is the 2nd best player in the deal, overall you get the 2 best player with additional money, but total value prevales over total money in this situation.

Also, Perez won't keep the job over Wood, for the REAL money they invested in Wood he will get as many chances as possible to close games, Perez may be closer of the future, but thats not happening this year.

I would take Pena over DLee, and no way would I give up CarGo over Kubel.

The dollar values won't have any bearing towards this year. We don't have a salary cap during the year so the only reason to consider the prices will be for keeper purposes. Perez has the only keeper potential and that's only if he can keep getting saves. Trout might eventually be valueable, but he's still in the low levels of the minors.

And the rest of the roster...

C Geovany Soto
1B Adrian Gonzalez
2B Dustin Pedroia
3B Pablo Sandoval
SS Hanley Ramirez
CI Michael Cuddyer
MI Rafael Furcal
LF Carlos Gonzalez
CF Jacoby Ellsbury
RF Kyle Blanks
OF Jason Kubel
DH Franklin Gutierrez
B Michael Young
B Ryan Ludwick
B Mark Derosa

SP Clayton Kershaw
SP Max Scherzer
SP Jake Peavy
RP Jose Valverde
RP Brian Wilson
RP Chris Perez
P Phil Hughes
P Jered Weaver
P JA Happ
B Ted Lilly

Yeah I still say hell yes to this deal.. That secures you 3 top notch closers, and like you said would then beef your bats WAY up. Adding Pena to the likes of AGon/Peds/Panda/HanRam is sweet... Id do the deal
