1st Pick in HR Derby League - What to do? - WHIR

Ok so yes, it's a good problem to have. But it really is a tricky thing once you start looking at it.

Yahoo HR Derby League Rotisserie (Most HR's at the end of the Year takes the cake)

Start one from Each position (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF)

7 Teams @ 8 rounds = 56 players.

I broke it down by ESPN's HR Projections and found the following information:

Of the top 40 players in HR Projections:

19 are 1B
3 are 2B
6 are 3B
2 are SS
10 are OF

Then you look at difference from the top guy at the position to the #7 guy and you find the biggest differences at 3B in SS noting atleast a 10HR Difference between the 2.

Then you take into account that you NEED 3 Outfilders....

So what would you do? I'm leaning on taking a Howard or Fielder as these guys have the potential to kick you 50 HR/s, and that's what the guys over at ESPN Answer Guys said. But i wanted to throw this at you guys to see what you thought. It's an interesting oe!

As always, will help in return so please leave a link

Ryan Howard easily in this setup, no question. He's the most reliable power source going.

Thanks man. Yeah Fielder/Howard are almost sure bets to hit 45+. But Howard is over 30 and Fielder is 25. I've always been a Howard guy though so that's what i'll probably do.

Any other suggestions with draft strategy in this type of setup?

Thanks!

He just turned 30 like 4 months ago, he's not 34 here.

I guess trying to get the most reliable sources of power year in year out like Howard, Dunn, Uggla, etc. would be nice.

I agree that Howard is the logical choice here. I try not to read too much into spring training hype, but apparently Howard is more conditioned than ever before. We may have only seen the tip of the iceberg. And I would just feel more comfortable banking on Howard and the Phils vs. Prince and the Brewers.

I doubt you could go wrong with either, though.

Agreed completely. Howard has to be the guy. I understand the dilemma with the power at 1B but first pick overall....yup. However, as a Phillies fan, keep in mind he is going to frustrate you for the first month, as he slumps his way into May.
