Utley Blockbuster -- Advice Needed - WHIR

Postby sigriffey » Fri Mar 26, 2010 11:40 am

Been sitting on this deal but need to make a decision.

Do I deal Utley and Rajai Davis for Brandon Phillips and Denard Span?

We use cats like singles, doubles and triples whichis why it is intriguing. Also, I have to throw Utley back after this year, whereas Phillips can be kept thru 2011 and Span thru 2012. I have big guys I have to throw back after this year (Pujols, A-Rod, Utley, Sabathia, and Halladay --- most of the studs drafted from 2008 go back after this year).

Anyone have a gut instinct on this one? See league details below.

12 Team H2H League with 6 keepers. Play 3 active utility.

9 x 9 categories (R, 1B, 2B, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, BB, AVG -- IP, CG, W, L, ER, ERA, K, SV, WHIP)

MY TEAM:

C Geovany Soto
1B Albert Pujols
2B Chase Utley
3B Alex Rodriguez
SS Jason Bartlett
OF Jason Bay
OF Andrew McCutchen
OF Carlos Gonzalez
UT Rajai Davis
UT Magglio Ordonez
UT James Loney
BN Dexter Fowler
BN Alberto Callaspo
BN Jhonny Peralta

SP Roy Halladay
SP Zach Greinke
SP CC Sabathia
SP Rick Porcello
SP Jorge De La Rosa
SP Ted Lilly
SP Derek Lowe
RP Joakim Soria
RP K-Rod

I am not doing this deal....I think you are too hung up on the fact that you will have to give Utley back so you are willing to make your team weaker this year.

Utley is clearly better than Phillips and take a look at Davis and Span. There is a very good chance that they can post very similar numbers this year, with Davis putting up about 30 more steals.

So you are loosing on the Utley end and just about breaking even on Davis and Span, so why would you make this deal. I say hold on to Utley and play for this year.

I absolutely agree. Utley is much better than phillips and rajai will be leading off for Oak and could end up with similar numbers to span....stay put.

No way would I deal Utley for that, even if you get more years out of Phillips. Go for the top spot this year since a lot of guys are going back into the draft after this season. You certainly have the roster to go for it. ;-D

Thanks everyone. I think I have been sufficiently convinced that this deal is not worth it. Appreciate your help.

If you guys can, I posted a seperate post about blockbuster Deals A and B. Would love some eyes on it. As always, send me your links and I am happy to help. Cheers.

Thanks for helping with mine. I see that you decided not to do this deal....good.

If you really want to deal Utley for Phillips, I'd ask for another GOOD player to make up the difference...and Span just isn't that guy

Yeah, I just think -- and thanks to all the insight on this board for this -- that I am neither helping my power nor my sb in that deal. I also am not helping my SP K's. And those are areas I would care about.

And as for playing for the title, yes, I have won the last 4 years and would really want to try to go for the 5th in a row, especially since some of my huge assets go back into the draft next year.

I am currently looking at Sizemore in another deal -- would maybe move McCutchen or Carlos Gonzalez, but not both.
