Trading Strasburg

Postby Buster Douglas » Fri Mar 26, 2010 9:38 am

Gents, could use some help here. 6th year of a keeper league, and keepers will be cut to 4 at the end of this year. 3 year cap on keepers, but other than that, no strings attached. I have Pujols, Utley, Cabrera, Greinke and Haren as potential keepers, so I don't know what I'd do with Strasburg, but I also don't want to sell him short in a keeper league.

I give:
Strasburg
Ichiro
Snider

I get:
Ubaldo
Choo
Hunter
Span

Roster is below:
C: Suzuki
1b: Pujols
2b: Utley
3b: Young
ss: Rollins
Of: Bay
Of: Ichiro
Of: Reimold
UT: M. Cabrera
BN: Heyward
BN: C. Davis
BN: T. Snider

SP: Greinke
SP: Haren
RP: Hoffman
RP: Fuentes
P: Capps
P: Thornton
P: B. Anderson
BN: S. Baker
BN: G. Floyd
BN: E. Santana

Thanks in advance. WHIR.

Great deal for you, so long as you still are able to keep all your guys you currently have (assuming none have been kept 3 years already). Playing for this year, Ubaldo is more valuable than Strasburg, Choo is almost just as valuable as a declining Ichiro and Hunter AND Span are a big upgrade over Snider. Hunter/Span would be nice to have too in case Reimold doesn't pan out this year. I say do it.

Thanks for the help.

In your format, I would move strasburg. He certainly won't have the same value as your current keepers at the end of year and the pieces being offered in return will contribute much more then what you are giving up this year.
If you found my advice helpful, please help me

When do the contracts on your current keepers expire?

Because there is no sliding compensation scale for your league(auction $, draft pick, etc.), Strasburg really isn't in the same breath as your other keepers and I wouldnt hesitate to deal him.

This deal adds nice depth to your team, but at least one of these guys is going to sit on your bench. I also strongly disagree with the first poster that Choo is almost as valuable as a declining Ichiro. Dude hit .350 last year and still had respectable numbers in other categories. Steals and Homers are everywhere this year, but batting average is hard to come by.

I'd see if you can do a smaller variation of this deal where you get rid of Strasburg plus a throw in and get Choo/Ubaldo in return.

Also, if Cabrera or Pujols are expiring soon, you could get a bounty for one of those guys.

If I'm understanding right, you're not keeping anyone involved in this trade - 4 of those 5 you mentioned will certainly be kept. So...

Ichiro = Span, close enough
Snider < Choo/Hunter, this year
Strasburg < Ubaldo, this year

I like it a lot.
