Pitching sucks so I'm thinking about trying something differ

Postby theplatypus » Tue Mar 23, 2010 8:25 pm

My starters suck so I was thinking about supplementing with a few top tier setup guys.( typical 12 team 5x5 H2H league) I would keep 3 starters, 3 closers, and add a few setup guys to lower era & whip(hopefully) and if I'm lucky a few wins here and there. Thoughts on the strategy? Team in general?

Here's the team

Matt Wieters, Bal C
1B Joey Votto, Cin
2B Robinson Cano, NYY 2B
3B Alex Rodriguez, NYY 3B
SS Troy Tulowitzki, Col SS
2B/SS Stephen Drew, Ari SS
1B/3B Chris Davis, Tex 1B
OF Andre Ethier, LAD OF
OF Adam Jones, Bal OF
OF Josh Hamilton, Tex OF
OF Hunter Pence, Hou OF
OF Nolan Reimold, Bal OF
UTIL Lastings Milledge, Pit OF

Bench Scott Sizemore, Det 2B

P Trevor Hoffman, Mil RP
P Billy Wagner, Atl
P J.A. Happ, Phi SP,
P Mike Gonzalez, Bal RP DTD
P Wade Davis, TB SP
P Hiroki Kuroda, LAD SP
P Joba Chamberlain, NYY SP

How many pitching slots do you need to fill?

Is there an IP limit (min/max) in your H2H league?

I don't mind punting Wins and not using starters all that much in a H2H league, but I don't think you can get away with punting Ws and Ks. So, unless you've got the right mix of guys (SP/Closers/MR) it's going to be tough to keep up in Ks who are throwing double your innings in a week.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure how you ended up with no top-50 SP in a 12 team league (sorry, missed Kuroda). It's pretty obvious you weren't just focusing on hitting, because it's not like you're not all that strong there either (not bad, but not lights out like you'd expect to be if you didn't draft a SP until the 15th round). Even your RPs aren't top-tier guys... I'm not even sure I can identify who your picks were between rounds 7 and 15.

This looks like a nightmare situation. I don't know if I'd even want to keep three of your SP on that staff. Other than Wade Davis, who may blossom, this looks like a bunch of replacement-level chaff. I honestly think that you'd be able to do better just finding some guys on the WW and dropping the guys you do have.

Yeah, I'd want to see who's on the WW in your league for SPs.

On the RP front you can certainly massage your ratios down if you're using the right relief guys. If the closers who get saves are off the board you could look at guys like Matt Thornton or Mike Wuertz to help out. In that role I'd prefer players like them who are going to get you some Ks as well - I'd aim for a guy you think can get you 80-100 Ks, in addition to the low ratios. If you're in a innings capped league you can look at pretty much any middle reliever who's got a high K/9 though - guys like Daniel Bard for example. There's a bunch of middle relievers you could look at really.
