Middle Relievers in H2H leagues?

Postby SLBarnes » Tue Mar 23, 2010 6:36 pm

I've been doing some reading on the relevance of Middle Relievers (MRs) in a 12 team 5x5 H2H league. While clearly they won't do well in wins, they will provide good WHIP , K's, and ERA.

Do you think it would be a smart idea to snag a top MR (such as Matt Thornton of CWS) to help aid in those categories? Would you draft theses guys in the latter rounds? or scour the WW after the draft has taken place?

According to Razzball, the top 10 MRs are:

1. Matt Thornton
2. Fernando Rodney
3. Scott Downs/Jason Frasor
4. Phil Hughes/Joba Chamberlain
5. Takashi Saito
6. Matt Lindstrom
7.Jason Motte
8. Matt Guerrier
9. Drew Storen
10. Franklin Morales

Here is the link for the whole article. http://razzball.com/top-20-middle-relievers-2010-fantasy-baseba

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!
Thanks guys, WHIR!

I never draft middle relievers (except closers), but I always carry at least one in all of my H2H leagues. They do help with K's/ERA/WHIP. The reason I never draft MR's is gems can always be found on the waiver wire during the season. And if your lucky, your MR might even get you a save here and there.

It's my preference to not draft MRs unless they will have a good shot at closing in the near future. Guys like Mike Adams, Gregerson (H. Bell trade), F. Morales, Rauch, Guerrier, Mijares (MIN pen without Nathan), etc. In a non-holds league solid MRs seem to come around very often and I usually wind up dropping them for a hot FA when I do rarely draft them.

No thanks, a middle reliever will get you maybe a couple of innings and a strikeout or two per week. They're more likely to hurt you with a blow up than significantly help you.
