Lets try this again . 2nd overall pick

Postby Surfs up » Sat Mar 20, 2010 3:15 pm

I'm in a 12 team 5x5 mixed Keep 9 players and draft 16 rds. Total of 25 players. 15 hitters and 10 pitchers.
Here is my team as of right now
Pujols
M. Cabrera
Wright
Utley
Reyes
Holliday
Cliff Lee
Gallardo
Josh Johnson
Here are the top players avalible in the draft after the first pick which is Hanley.
Halladay
Sabathia
Haren
Crawford
Hamels
Papelbon
Zimmerman
Ad. Gonzalez
Br. Phillips
McCann
I also have the third(15th overall )and fourth ( 16th overall ) picks in the second rds.I don't have a 3rd round pick.
I have been leaning toward Halladay because I would have four strong starters to go with my solid hitting keepers. After that loading up on hitting with my next four picks or so. But Crawford and all those steals is tough to pass on. And if he gets traded when the Rays are out of it he could end up with the Yankees . Being left handed that short porch in right would help his power.
Here is a list of the top 12 players avalible in the draft after the first round players are gone.
Dunn
Quentin
Hunter
Uggla
M. Young
Kendricks
Nolasco
McClouth
Wandy
Kershaw
Oswalt
Alexi Ramirez
Lots of players avalible but mostly guys that would be taken in middle or later rounds in a new draft.
The top players are avalible because their contracts ran out. All of my players can be kept two and three more years.
Who would you take with the pick if you were me? Who would you go after in the second round having two picks?
Would you take Heyward with one of them and a top pitcher ? What would you do? Draft day is two weeks away.

Thoughts?

With your 1st pick, definately take Halladay to solidify your rotation. For your 2nd round pick, take Dunn because he is a sure 40HR bet and I'd go with either McLouth or Alexi Ramirez as you'll be needing some speed with Reyes out for a month.
I'm Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!

I've looked at Dunn. His average scares me but yes the 40 hrs and 100 rbi is nothing to sneeze at.Not sure he will still be there with the third pick in the second round.I also doubt Heyward lasts into the forth round which is when my next pick will be.

I like Halladay with your first pick as well, although I would definitely consider Crawford. You couldn't really go wrong with either one value wise, so I guess it would come down to what you want to do with your picks in the second round.

As for the second round, assuming all of the first list is gone, target Dunn. Sure it's a BA hit, but with Cabrera, Wright, Holliday, and Pujols, you can afford it. After Dunn the decision is a bit tougher. Nolasco and Kershaw are good value, but if you nab Halladay you'll already have a strong foundation for your rotation. Quentin would be a decent pick, especially if you miss out on Dunn.

If you take Crawford first, you could probably justify sweeping up one (or both) of those SPs. As Neboguy mentioned, Alexi Ramirez would make some sense, although I hate drafting a fill-in that early when you could just target another starter for your team instead.

If you have a utility position I would contemplate taking Gonzalez and scooping up Nolasco or Kershaw. If not, then there is no reason to go for another 1B with Pujols on your roster. That said I would then go Halladay or CC..

Would go with Halladay then Dunn or Gonzalez.
Not so big on Kershaw right now. Think he is a little hyped.

Please see mine.

I would go for Crawford over Halladay honestly. Yes, Halladay is a beast, but you already have 3 solid starters and Crawford would be a nice speed addition. Who knows how many SB reyes is going to have this year.

I am concerned that Reyes might be out a while. Halladay is 33 years old. Crawford I believe is 29. He could get traded if the Rays are out of it. I could also pick up a guy like Pierre , Bourn, Morgan or Raja Davis with my 4th round pick if one of them is still there for steals.
I'm really torn on what to do.

So what do you guys think of my last post? What about taking Crawford with my first pick. An then maybe Nolasco and Jason Heyward with my next two picks ? Any other suggestions?
