That second round pick

Postby beefcurtain » Thu Mar 18, 2010 4:31 pm

With the 10th pick in a H2H 6x6 league (OPS and Losses added), I plan to grab one of the top first basemen - Fielder, Cabrera, Howard or Tex.

Who do you think I should target with the second round selection? Tulo? Kinsler? Holliday?

What if Lincecum and Mauer fall?

I prefer to not spend early picks on pitchers & catchers.

Lincecum
Tulo
Kinsler

I would not take Mauer here unless you start 2 catchers.

In a H2H league that includes OPS I want power, which makes me second guess taking a starting pitcher.

Mauer is not over rated just because he's a catcher...

Project - .350 100+Runs 30 HRs 100+RBI

Other players who will put up those #'s:
Pujols +HR/RBI
Hanley +SB
Braun -BA +HR +SB
ARod -BA +HR/RBI +SB
Everyone else in the 1st round will have equal or lesser #'s than Mauer.

Pujols is really the only player in the league who will come anywhere close in AVG.

AND he's catcher.

I intend to take Mauer with the 5th pick of my upcoming draft after the above guys go 1-4.

Do you REALLY expect him to bat 30 HRs again? Almost everybody believes this was nothing but a power spike, and that he's much closer to a 20 HR guy.

if u have the 10th and the 13th i might go ahead and take lince at 10 andd then whoever is left out of the top 1b at 13th...i wouldnt consider mauer...i would take longo ahead of tulo/mauer/kinsler etc

You're also basing Mauer's best-case scenario, which would practically be a repeat. Even the most optimistic projection has Mauer pegged as a 105 R/RBI, 20 HR, .330 BA hitter. Mauer only had one double-digit HR season prior to '09 and it remains to be seen how Target Field will factor into his power performance. If Mauer's HR total dips to 15-20, you're basically getting Ichiro in round 2 for a little spike in power and of course, little to no SB. It just isn't a great value investment.

In a roto league with 2 C, I'd consider Mauer. In a H2H league where average is discounted to a certain degree, Mauer has less value even in a 2 C league.
