The dreaded 2 Catcher roster format

Postby Freebird27 » Wed Mar 17, 2010 11:08 pm

So here we are in RD 24 (35 rds) filling out our benches via slow draft and I have yet to take a catcher. Obviously the decent ones are gone...most available are either really young or blue hairs...some rookies as well, but Im not sure whether they end up in the minors or majors (Posey, Flores, Moore, Castro, Santana). Who would you target (available listed below)to at least get some production from the positions?

Olivo, Miguel C COL
Posey, Buster C SF (anyone have an idea when he comes up or if he starts in the majors?)
Flores, Jesus C WAS
Buck, John C TOR
Rodriguez, Ivan C WAS
Saltalamacchia, Jarrod C TEX
Teagarden, Taylor C TEX
Navarro, Dioner C TB
Santana, Carlos C CLE
Moore, Adam C SEA
Hernandez, Ramon C CIN
Paulino, Ronny C FLA
Snyder, Chris C ARI
Varitek, Jason C BOS
Mathis, Jeff C ANA
Torrealba, Yorvit C SD
Clement, Jeff C PIT
Castro, Jason C HOU
Towles, J.R. C HOU
Kendall, Jason C KC
Flowers, Tyler C CHW
Hundley, Nick C SD
Santos, Omir C NYM
Johnson, Rob C SEA
Kottaras, George C MIL
Arencibia, J.P. C TOR

That is a tough list. The rumor is if Huff does not start hitting that Posey could play 1st base. I do not believe it because they have not started him on the infield in spring training. I would probably go with

Ramon Hernandez (you know what you are going to get)
Jeff Clement is the high risk - reward type of player. I think he will play in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, we have like 15 bench spots so I am sure talent runs out before roster spots. If you were to gamble on a rookie for upside...I'm guessing its Posey?

I was thinking Salty or even Pudge....for one of the spots..think hernandez is the better way to go....and I agree on clement. Either way whoever I have there isnt going to help me in avg anyway.

I would gamble on Posey first and Clement second. If you need 1 starter then go with Hernandez.

Clement for me. He's flying way under the radar for a C-eligible guy with 20 HR power who will be handed a starting lineup spot.

I'm targeting Clement late in my draft as well. I would take him and Hernandez for start the season.

However, keep a close eye on both Posey and Santana... neither will likely break camp with their respective teams, mostly due to arbitration eligibility, but they'll be up as soon as they can, have nobody blocking there way, and are supposed to be guys you can get some decent production from.

Another to watch will be Montero for my yanks. They may try to get him up mid season, and he's a beast. At the moment we have fragile Nick Johnson slated to be our everyday DH, and should something happen to him he would be an obvious call-up. The problem with him is that he may not hold that C eligibility for a long time due to his size and. And I am rambling...... :-*

Zippy, you essentially read my mind.

I too have been researching catchers a lot lately. To answer the original question, if you have 15 bench spots and your looking for upside at the catching position, in my mind it is santana, posey. If your looking for huge bat upside but a likely loss of catcher eligibility, Montero has to be at the top of your list. I might be a Yankees fan, but the kid is 20 and is as pure as a hitter I've seen in sometime via the minor leagues. However, he is also overweight and a little too tall to ever develop the catching skills needed in the majors. I've got him as the everyday DH as early as June for the Yankees, especially if the injury prone Johnson stumbles.

A cheap everyday starter would be clemment, hernadez, buck.
