When do MLB teams put their players on the DL?

Postby Havok1517 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 3:34 am

Someone please jog my memory. When do MLB teams typically place their injured players officially on the disabled list? I'm sure it varies by organization and I know players like Edinson Volquez and Jordan Zimmerman are already on the 60-Day DL since they're out for a foreseen extended period of time. Are they usually placed on the DL like a week before the season, a day or two before the season starts, or maybe right before a team's 1st game? With an unexpected number of difference makers like Nathan, Gordon, Reyes, Martin, Berkman, and Beltran likely to start the season on the DL, I figure knowing when a fantasy team can put a player on the DL and pick up another would be beneficial knowledge. I tried to do a search from last year to see if someone else asked a similar queston but I couldn't find an answer. Thx.

Off the top of my head, I think last year a heap went on the DL after the teams went home from camp but before the season started. I think that window is like 3 days. :-?

FYI, teams are now putting players on the 15-day DL. The Brewers just put Gamel and Riske on the DL. More teams should soon follow which will free up fantasy teams to add new players.

PS: The Tigers just put Minor & Seay on the 15-DL. Hopefully, other teams will follow suit soon.

This might be an interesting thing to track - to see if certain clubs/managers seem to have a trend as to if they wait until the last day or the last week or don't wait to put guys on the 15-day DL. If I were to look for the date all DL players are put on the DL what would be the best place for that? MLB.com's transaction page?

Berkman just hit the DL. Hopefully Yahoo will DL him soon so I can make the necessary roster moves.
