14th round...which direction?

Postby pokerplaya » Fri Mar 12, 2010 1:08 am

12 team h2h keeper league ....we are in the 14th round

I've filled all my offensive spots, but have no bench bats. Have a few injury concerns with Holiday & Berkman (supposedly nothing serious in their cases) and Reyes (who knows). Some notable bats I'm looking at that are still available (my pick is 3 away) include Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Quentin, Carlos Beltran (it's a h2h league so getting him this late could be huge) and Asdrubal Cabrera. With Cabrera, while I'm bothered that Reyes could miss a month, it's head to head, so I'm content riding the hot hand for a few weeks.

I have 4 SP's already, so I don't feel the need to go with another here. No one seems like a great value. Since we have 5 SP slots to fill, they tend to go quickly and the market has thinned.

I don't have any RP's, and there have been a few closer runs thus far. The top half are gone, and the best left include...Wagner, Hoffman, Gonzalez, Qualls and Jenks.

It's the 14th round, and I won't get another pick for 20 picks or so. It's completely possible the 3rd tier of closers is completely gone by my next pick and I'm left with the bottom barrel choices or none at all.

Value-wise, I think it would be wise to draft the bench bat...as having a guy like Soriano or Beltran (when he gets healthy) as a "bench" player, would give me a ludicrously deep lineup. However, I'm not sure I should pass again on a closer. With the names I've mentioned, what would you do?

I wouldn't touch Soriano. I'd go with Quentin.

So screw the closer call and be content to trade for one with my batting depth or punt the cat? (it's 6x6 ops/holds) which makes it a somewhat viable strategy, though I'm not a fan of punting anything.

No, I wouldn't punt it but Quentin or even Beltran strikes me as a huge bargain in the 14th round. I can't pass that up for a not too impressive closer. I'm sure there are still closers on the board after those 5. Grab 2 or 3 of the last tier.

Yeah...it's a keeper league in year 7, and the way our league is structured, pitching depth is huge and our supplemental draft has skewed heavily that way. But I can't seem to justify passing up on these bats, either...

hmmm that is a tough one....If those are the closers left and you miss out on them, you might me stumbling around trying to scoop one up off of waivers. Plus there is depth in the OF position. I just hate having to use roster space for injured players before the season even starts. It really depends on whether you think you could get a closer later on or on waivers if you do miss out on these closers that r left....

I'd select Quentin and hope to get one of the closers next round. I would probably take another closer from the last tier later on, but may opt to go upper tier holds guys, namely someone like Luke Gergerson or someone else who may end up getting saves down the line. Just my two cents.
