Last 2 Keepers - WHIR!

Postby MrAccoe » Tue Mar 09, 2010 4:39 pm

I've asked this board for help previously but now with my keeper deadline upcoming, I'd like a little bit more input.

7 keepers, 12 teams: 1st 5 keepers are A-Rod, Kemp, Holliday, Sizemore and Greinke.

My options for the last two are:

Carlos Pena
Billy Butler
Brett Anderson
Joakim Soria
Jose Lopez
Joe Nathan

I'm usually against keeping closers but in this situation I might have to since I don't have many more options. I would normally choose to keep Pena over Butler but pre-season ranks have Butler way higher than Pena so far. Also is Brett Anderson a viable keeper?

I would go with Butler and Anderson. I don't know if Butler ranks "way" higher than Pena, though -- it's age and avg against power. Anderson is somewhat speculative, like all young pitchers, but he's definitely worth a keeper slot.

Personally, I think any combo of those three is acceptable, but I'd go with the two young guys, esp in a keeper.

Agreed - and you don't have to worry about Nathan anymore since he's out for the year it sounds. (So maybe Soria becomes more important to you?)

I agree. I would like to see someone besides Anderson there, but Butler is solid and has a strong chances of being your keeper next year.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I am now leaning towards Butler and Anderson. Butler's been ranked roughly 20-30 spots above Pena so far so even though it's not "way" higher, it's quite a bit higher. Any thoughts on maybe Lopez instead of Anderson based on position scarcity?

Definite no to Lopez for me. Anderson has the stuff to be a top MLB pitcher. No way would I let him go for a solid but unexciting 2b.

Definitely Butler. The dude is only 23 going into the season and can flat out rake. He has a low K rate, has started to walk more, and some of those 51 doubles from last year should turn into dingers.

As for your last spot, it's between Anderson and Soria. I love Anderson's future but Soria has already proven himself. You must decide if a closer or another SP is important to you.
