Need advice for keepers

Postby DigitalFool » Tue Mar 09, 2010 3:24 pm

I inherited a deadbeat team that didn't win any H2H matchups all year. Not much to work with in this 8 team league, but just wanted some quick advice who I should keep for next year. I can keep 5. (This will be my second fantasy baseball attempt, first on ESPN).

I have one distinct advantage of being the worst team, I get first pick and I get to see who is available after the other teams pick their keepers.

Top players avail: Crawford, J. Upton, Tulowitzki, Ellsbury, Gonzalez
Top pitchers avail: (all closers), Santana, Carpenter, Gallardo, Beckett

Daily Rotation Positions:

C/1B/2B/3B/SS/OF/OF/OF/UTIL (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OBP)
9 P slots (K, QS, W, SV, ERA, WHIP)

My current team:

Russell Martin - C
Luke Scott - OF/DH
Akinori Iwamura - 2B
Mark DeRosa - 3B
Derek Jeter - SS
Matt Holliday - OF
Ichiro - OF
Ryan Ludwick - OF
Ben Zobrist - 2B/OF
Paul Konerko - 1B
Derek Lee - 1B
Magglio Ordonez - OF/DH
Aramis Ramirez - 3B
Brandon Phillips - 2B
Matt Wieters - C
Grady Sizemore - OF
Carlos Pena - 1B

Mariano Rivera
Chad Billingsley
Bobby Jenks
Ted Lilly
Davide Price
Brandon Morrow
Carlos Zambrano
Jarrod Washburn
Vincente Padilla
Brandon Webb

I don't know if I'm going to keep any pitchers and I'm looking to keep two of my OF (Holliday/Sizemore), Jeter (although Tulo is available with first pick), Weiters and Phillips and take Upton with my first pick and take best pitcher available.

Thanks in advance!

I would keep Holliday, Sizemore, and Weiters for sure. Then I would keep one of your 2B (Phillips or Zobrist). To round out your keepers, I think Mo Rivera is a solid option. Letting Jeter go and drafting Tulo is a good idea.

Holliday
Sizemore
Wieters
Ichiro
Jeter

I'd draft J Upton personally. If nobody else kept a closer, I see no reason why you should keep Mo.

Then I would take Tulo with the 1st pick. Its a tough call though. Would you rather have J Upton and Jeter...or either Sizemore/Ichiro and Tulo? I'd like the 2nd option personally.

Agreed, all closers available and with only 8 teams (and 9 pitching slots) - I'm not overly concerned at that position.

Problem with keeping Holliday, Sizemore AND Ichiro is that then all three OF positions are taken. Then I would be forced to play Upton as UTIL. It's not a bad thing, I just was hoping not to fill OF so early when there is some later talent that could be had later?

That's my dilemma...

In a keeper league (new to me), it seems it would make sense to lock up a talent like Upton for years to come. I'm lukewarm on keeping Jeter/Ichiro just because of diminishing returns; they won't take me very far in the coming years.

Judging by current rosters, I don't think either Ichiro or Jeter would make back to me in round 2/3.

Right now, I have (and I am sensing agreement so far) that Holliday, Sizemore and Weiters are my locks.

Tulo > Jeter - keep Ichiro, drop Jeter and draft Tulo
Upton > Ichiro - Keep Jeter, drop Ichiro and draft Upton

I have Phillips slightly above Zobrist, but Zobrist does have 2B/OF options.
