J. Montero or C. Santana as Dynasty Pick?

Postby nacho742 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 6:59 pm

I'm close to flipping a coin at this point, but who's the better pick in a H2H 5x5 (OBP over AVG) keeper league?

I don't necessarily need either to produce for me at the big league level this year, but assuming all goes well for both of them this year, I will keep one as a rookie carryover going into 2011.

Santana:
- Pros -- elite patience (huge walk rate key for OBP league), likely to stick defensively at C, more likely to get playing time in 2010
- Cons -- probably more of a McCann/VMart upside

Montero:
- Pros -- elite hitter (compared to M-Cab), massive upside (top 5 hitter)
- Cons -- unlikley to stick at C (e.g. 1 year eligibility), Yankees have no incentive to rush him, longshot to get playing time in 2010

Who is the better pick?

I'm probably going with Montero at this point -- i'd rather have a top 5 potential bat regardless of position eligibility, but am I underrated Santana's upside?

Thanks. WHIR!

Santana's upside is Victor Martinez but Montero's is like Manny Ramirez, he's that ridiculous of a hitting prospect.

If you can wait a year, take Montero.

I think this is pretty easily in Montero's favor. What Montero did in AA last season at the age of 19 compares pretty well to what Santana did at the same level at 4 years older. At age 18, Montero hit 25 home runs in the lower levels, which is more than Santana has hit in any season. The only place Santana has an edge is BB/K ratio, but that has more to do with age and experience which will come in time for Montero.

I agree Santana is more likely to stick at C and get to the majors half a season earlier, but he has nowhere near the ceiling that Montero has as an all around hitter.

Monteor can be putting up .320/40/130 seasons down the road, Santana will likely peak in the .300/25/100 range

I would take Santana. Would rather lock up a good C, versus a DH.

I think Montero is a really special bat... the kind that doesn't come often and what he did at his age in A and AA was really silly. If not for his late finger injury he would of taken the MILB top prospect award over Heyward imo. C or not theres really no other prospect with that type of bat (aside from Heyward) in the minors. Your looking at a possible Miguel Cabrera ceiling there if all goes well.... very high ceiling.
