Who should I keep?

Postby Mateo de Lorenzo » Sun Mar 07, 2010 12:13 am

Hi everybody. My name is Mateo. First time poster. Anyways, I am doing my first keeper league this year so am looking for some input as to who I should keep. This is a standard 5x5 roto league. I am allowed up to seven keepers and am limited to 15 contract years. For each keeper I choose, I lose a draft pick the next season from the round said keeper was drafted. For each subsequent year keeper is kept, I lose a draft pick three rounds higher. So, if I keep Matt Laporta for three years, I lose a draft pick in the 23rd round this year, the 20th round in 2011 and the 17th round in 2012.

There are twelve teams in my league.

Below is a list of my current roster. In parenthesis is the round I would lose a draft pick in this year.

Miguel Olivo (20)
Adam Laroche (13)
Willy Aybar (20)
Jose Bautista (20)
Troy Tulowitzki (2)
Juan Uribe (20)
Andy Laroche (20)
Ryan Braun (1)
Adam Lind (12)
Hunter Pence (1)
Ryan Rayburn (20)
Marcus Thames (20)
Hidecki Matsui (13)
Mat Latos (20)
Justin Verlander (4)
Jeremy Affeldt (20)
Andrew Bailey (20)
Jesse Crain (20)
Brandon League (20)
Joe Nathan (1)
Marco Scutaro (20)
Eric O. Young (20)
Brad Hawpe (4)
Matt Laporta (23)

Minor Leaguers (allowed two max, not required to have any. A minor league keeper does not affect keeper totals unless they are put on major league roster.

Max Ramirez (27)

So, the players I am leaning towards keeping are as follows:

Ryan Braun, 2-3 years
Adam Lind, 2 years
Andrew Bailey, 3 years
Matt Laporta, 2-3 years

There are others on my roster I have considered (Tulo, Verlander) but am not sure. Would appreciate any and all input.

Also, if you have any input on what minor leaguers to draft that will hopefully make an impact in 2011 or 2012 it would be appreciated.

My minor league ideas right now, in no particular order are: Kyle Drabek, Dee Gordon, Mike Stanton, Chris Withrow.

Braun, Lind and Bailey seem like you best bets to me.

You have a great name, by the way.

Welcome to the Cafe. I like the ones you have suggested. I would also keep Mat Latos. I'm not keen on keeping Verlander and losing the 4th rd pick due to all the pitches he threw last year. Nor do I want to lose a 2nd rd pick on Tulo until I see more consistency. Desmond Jennings and Mike Stanton are the minor leaguers that come to mind.

Interesting advice, everybody. Seems like I am in the same boat with Verlander as others. Some say keep for a year, others say don't. I am pretty much in agreement with Tulo. I figure worst case scenario is I don't keep him, but by the time I draft in the second round I can either upgrade or still draft him. (Only three people draft in the first round and its Kentucky Derby style draft, so I could get an early pick in the second round.)

Some have said I should keep Mat Latos, but only for one year? I don't see him doing anything this year to help or to build trade value, so I would have to be convinced otherwise.

I am surprised Matt Laporta isn't getting
