Draft Pick Help

Postby oddmanout7 » Sat Mar 06, 2010 3:53 am

I am in a 12 team H2H dynasty league with 28 man rosters, and 25 of them kept. We also have a 3 player minor league roster.

We are currently doing our preseason draft to fill out our roster. Due to numerous trades and prospects being added to yahoo (we have to roster them immediately), I only have one pick in the draft. I have one more team that will select before me. What do you think?

Players of interest:

Aaron Crow - Should move quickly, and may contribute this season. Upside?
Daniel Hudson - High floor, but a low ceiling, should be decent, but not great
Brad Lincoln - Looked better last year, and is competing for #5 spot, Ks are lacking
Todd Frazier - eligible at 2B, will likely be used as utility player, solid bat, playing time?
Octavio Dotel - Good Ks, closer for PIT
Brandon Lyon - Closer for HOU
Matt Capps - Closer for WAS
Jake Arrieta - not a big fan, but some rank in top 100 prospects
Adrian Beltre - move to BOS should help all around numbers, might be a nice stash
Franklin Gutierrez - not a flashy pick, but does have a shot at 20/20
Juan Pierre - SB

Minors
01. F. Freeman (Atl - 1B)
02. C. Friedrich (Col - Sp)
03. C. Crosby (Det - SP)

I would keep the minor leaguers you have. I saw an article headline the other day about Frazier that really summed up his problem in Cincy: "Reds Frazier almost too versatile." I like Crow but he probably won't open with the team and while Lincoln could conceivably win the fifth starter job, he doesn't excite me (plus that job is in Pittsburgh. %-6 )

You don't need hitting, but Beltre as a stash/trade chip is great. Alternatively, I would consider adding one of Capps/Dotel if you had an interest in shipping out one of your three closers in exchange for a starter. I think your greatest potential weakness is in the rotation. Nice team though ;-D

Either add Capps with the intention of trading him when other teams start getting frantic about saves, or pick up Pierre as a very sold back-up OF with trade potential.

Gutierrez is the best player there, got to take the all around player upside.

I think I have a chance at competing this year, or at least making the playoffs once again.
As I already have a bunch of young players, I was looking at adding someone who can help me now.

For me, it comes down to Dotel, Beltre, and FGut.

Dotel will give me a 4th closer, and make me very competitive in the saves category week to week.
Beltre will give me a trade chip as some teams in the league are lacking starting quality 3B. If Beltre can put together a rebound with .270 25HR he could be useful to someone.
FGut has upside, but I already have lots of OF. Again 20/20 possibilities are certainly tempting.

I also looked at Frazier but with his playing time up in the air, it looks like he might not get a shot until next year, where I could use the help now.

Let me know if you guys have any additional comments.

You have lots of OF but what's the difference between Guit and Beltre when it's David Wright at 3B and no CI slot? You have 3B locked down forever, OF/UTIL has openings.

That is true. The only thing is that Beltre will be a better trade chip than FGut. Many people don't recognize FGut's value yet, while I have seen some crazy numbers projected for Beltre in Boston. Then again, locking up saves every week Dotel is also tempting. My pick is on the clock, but I welcome any last minute additions.

Thanks for the help.

I'd go with either Beltre or Gutierrez.

The trade value part could be debatable. Many people probably aren't onto Guit's skills yet but Beltre is over 30 and almost any player over 30 has sharply reduced trade value in a dynasty for most people.
