Draft Help -- Rank Top 5

Postby nacho742 » Wed Mar 03, 2010 11:45 pm

16 team 5x5 (obp) h2h keeper league. WHIR 100% w/ link

I've got 2 of the next 5 picks and really need to round out my roster b/c I don't pick again for 30 slots. With that in mind i'm looking way down my MDP list to make sure there aren't any guys I really want that might get snagged. Here's a list of guys i'm looking at -- give me a top 5 (roster below):

Abreu, Montero, Ian Stewart, Heath Bell, Scott Baker, Max Scherzer, Clay Buchholz, Nolan Reimold, Denard Span, Y. Escobar, R. Soriano

I'm torn -- the guys I love (Abreu, Stewart, Reimold) i've got their positions pretty much filled. Guys I want at other positions (Escobar, Montero) would probably be reaches at this point (picks are #137, #140). Do I just go for pitching grabbing a C and a SS later (decent depth).

My Team so far:
C
1B: Dunn
2B: Zobrist
3B: Wright
SS
IF
OF: JUpton
OF: Sizemore
OF: McCutchen
UT

SP: Hamels
SP: Kershaw
SP
SP
SP
RP: Soria

1. IMO, two of the eleven players listed can be eliminated as reaches right from the start: Buchholz and Reimold.

2. Abreu: how likely is it that he falls to that draft spot? Not very.

3. You have two closers listed. You only need one, the other can be eliminated (unless you decide to wait on the closer spot which makes the process of elimination even easier).

4. Montero: I’m not a believer in overpaying/reaching at the catcher spot at this point in the draft unless I have a really strong feeling about someone (which I very seldom do). I’d rather wait on someone like Ianetta or even Carlos Ruiz. Now your options are down to six from the original eleven.

5. Scherzer/Baker: I’m thinking about this in terms of “pitcher pairings” and one statistic: WHIP. If you select Scherzer for the K’s and are not banking on a guaranteed improvement in WHIP, then you are ALMOST forced to consider pairing him with someone like Baker since Baker will likely be one of the few remaining pitchers left on the board with a solid WHIP number. This is even more important when you consider that no one would be surprised if Kershaw saw a regression in his WHIP ratio (second-worst walks per nine innings among qualified starters). Alternative strategies would be to select Baker with one of the two picks and then pair him later on with someone like Jonathan Sanchez if you haven’t satisfied your K requirements by that point in the draft, or draft additional low-WHIP RP’s.

Therefore, by way of elimination (and in no particular order):
Stewart
Span
Baker
Escobar
Bell or Soriano... or Scherzer if you decide to wait on the other closer spot.

I'd take Abreu or Span and slot them in at UTIL. I'd take Heath Bell with the second pick, or if you don't want to go closer, then Scott Baker.
