I am curious who you think will have more value, short-term & long-term between Brian Matusz and Elvis Andrus. I have one keeper spot left (out of 12) and I usually reserve it for a kid, but can't decide between them. It is a points league that is slanted towards pitching, but SB are worth 2 points so Andrus has inherent value on that alone. I feel like I am probably over-valuing Andrus because of the way that Hanley Ramirez exploded (at a similar age) in his second year. I know that he is unlikely to develop power, at least not quickly, but is he the next Jose Reyes or, given his defensive skills, the next Rey Ordonez. I like Matusz on a young Oriole team and even though he is pitching in the A.L. East and may struggle for wins, feel like he has a rare maturity for such a young arm. Also, give consideration to who seems to have more value in your leagues as that would help me figure out who would be easier to retain through the draft.
Honestly, I believe Matusz has long term value, but at the same time Andrus has short term and long term value. I would keep Andrus. I also remember Hanley's breakout performace as I drafted him in the 23rd round his first year with the Marlins (2006). I agree that Andrus may never develope Hanley's power. But take into account he is playing his home games in Arlington and in a potent lineup. Banking on pitcher success at an early age is a much higher gamble. Matusz will prob not be the next Tim Lincecum, and may be the next Yusmeiro Petit.
I'd probably keep Andrus. Now, in a league slanted towards SP, then I may be tempted to keep Matusz. I like him. He's a good arm, but Andrus has more value this year. That's the temptation to me.
I go for Andrus, playing in texas, around the guys he's got, he'll be good now and he'll get better once they start leading him off. Maybe Matusz is the long term pick but i think thats long long term especially in the AL East, Bal isnt poised to win now, and regardless of the up and coming talent there, its still gonna be tough for a rookie SP in Bal to blow up, you keep andrus he's already taken his lumps i like him to go up from here...
I guess there was no curse... Boston just sucked for 86 years...
To give you an idea of just how slanted towards pitching this league is, Pujols was the only position player to crack the top 20 last year. However, SS depth is shallow no matter how the league is set up, while there are plenty of pitchers and their value is harder to predict from year to year. I have other veteran options that I am too embarrassed to tell you about because of the ridicule I would receive for not keeping them, and I also have Dexter Fowler, Drew Stubbs and Everth Cabrera if anyone thinks they would be better than Matusz or Andrus as keepers.
