Is Joe Mauer that much better than Brian McCann. Can I afford not to pick up a pitcher at the beginnin of the draft? Again, WHIR.
I'd do the deal. I'd try and work in getting a pick back as well, but even still, I'd sacrifice the short term loss of McCann + pitcher for the long term gain of adding another 1st/2nd round keeper to your stable of keepers. Besides, with your roster you could probably set it to auto pilot and win the league going away.

You never said who you would have taken at 1, or what hitters were there? I'm not on the McCann bus like a lot of folks. I think he's overrated. If you could get like Jimenez or Anderson at pick 10, i make the deal.

I would make that deal as well. Mauer is a big enough upgrade over McCann (especially in a keeper league) that it will overcome whatever drop in pitching from the first pick to the 10th pick. Just go SP back-to-back, maybe with your first 4 picks.
I would rank the pitchers as follows:
Hanson Billingsley Jimenez Anderson (check his growth in the 2nd half) Carpenter Strasburg Price Oswalt Weaver Scherzer (I like him, but his delivery scares me and I could see him as a closer at some point)
Sorry, I had been planning on taking either Steven Strasburg or Tommy Hanson 1st overall. As far as hitters available, mostly risky power bats such as Josh Hamilton, Aramis Ramirez, David Ortiz, Vlad Guerrero, Chris Davis, and Alfonso Soriano. Some inteteresting bats I'm willing to wait on are Garrett Jones, Alexi Ramirez, Billy Butler(who I think will have his breakout year), Jay Bruce, and Colby Rasmus. I just figured my lineup was filled, and set for years to come as far as keepers, so I needed to focus on pitching in the draft.
Hanson Billingsley (Bills and Ubaldo are very close but give nod to Bills for ballpark) Jimenez Strasburg (I'd stretch a bit here for future keeper purposes only... not 2010 production) Carpenter (health concerns) Scherzer (workload / shoulder concerns. but taking the upside and K potential here) Oswalt or Weaver... pretty even in my eyes with slight nod to Weaver for health, Ws and Ks Price Andersen
I would say this list is dead on. Hanson with the first pick for sure, and if Bills or Jimenez are around for the 10th pick, I would suggested going with one of them over Strasburg so that you have enough pitching this year.
Thanks for the help with the Mauer trade, the trade is pending and will go through later today. My only lingering question is wether Ubaldo has more upside than David Price and Brett Anderson. I guess maybe not for this year, but with Johan's numbers on the decline, I'm gonna be looking to replace my ace for the next few years. Is Ubaldo really gonna be that guy, or can I look to Price or Anderson?
