Trading Sabathia (WHIR)

Postby acslater » Wed Feb 17, 2010 9:52 am

Sorry, I know this is long. I appreciate any help I can get. I am in an AL-Only Keeper league. The league has 12 teams with standard scoring plus we've just added OPS and Quality Start categories. We are allowed to keep 10 players from last year. Positions are:
1 1B
1 2B
1 3B
1 SS
3 OF
2 UTIL
2 SP
2 RP
3 P

My current roster (The "K" indicates who I plan to keep at this point):
Alex Avila
Paul Konerko
Alexei Ramirez (K)
Chris Davis (K)
Jhonny Peralta
Shin-Soo Choo (K)
Johnny Damon
Travis Snider (K)
Kevin Kouzmanoff (K)
Daric Barton
Mike Aviles

Mark Rzepczynski (K)
David Hernandez
Bobby Jenks (K)
Brandon Morrow
Gio Gonzalez
Daniel Hudson (K)
David Purcey
Jeff Niemann (K)
Nick Blackburn
CC Sabathia (K)
Junichi Tazawa
Shaun Marcum

My team is pretty bad. I've finished next to last and last the last 2 years. So, my plan is to get younger and add some good prospects through trades and the draft. I've decided the best way to jump start that is to trade Sabathia. I made the announcement to the league that he was available and here are the offers I've received:

1. Matt LaPorta, Rajai Davis, 1st Rounder (11th overall) for Sabathia plus a late round pick
2. David Price, Scott Kazmir for Sabathia
3. David Price, Scott Kazmir, Scott Feldman, 1st Rounder (10th) for Sabathia and my 1st (2nd overall, which will likely be Cliff Lee)
4. Justin Masterson, Travis D'Arnaud, and 1st Rounder (8th Overall) for Sabathia
5. Mike Napoli, 2nd Rounder, 6th Rounder for Sabathia

What do you guys think? #1 and #2 are the most intriguing to me.

I don't want to sound harsh but I don't think trading you best player (and I mean your best player 8-o ) to get young players is a good strategy to follow, especially for what was offered to you. You need to start drafting better. Instead of trading for younger players try to draft them and read the posts here at the cafe. Who have you been drafting with your early picks?

Sabathia is a top 5 pitcher, and you need to get much more. Price is miles away from becoming near as good as CC. He might have the upside, but right now they aren't remotely close.

No disrespect but when Kouzmanoff is a keeper (regardless of how deep your league is), you have a problem. You definitely need to shake things up and rebuilding with young talent isn't a bad idea, but as has already been stated you need more than what's being offered. Price is a good star, pick up a bat too if you can.
