Our league is a 20 team roto 5x5, but with OBP replacing AVG. We keep 9 guys, and have a prospect roster where most of the best young'ins are found. We Start C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, 3 OF, DH, with a 1400 IP limit.
So in practice, premium position players are goldmines and the mediocre ones go up in value, as there will always be some teams stuck starting the 15th-20th best SS/2B/C, which can get real ugly. Closers are also highly sought, as 20 teams make them harder to acquire. Top SP's maintain their value with the high IP limit.
My team:
C Joe Mauer 1B Nick Johnson 2B Chase Utley 3B Aubrey Huff SS Jason Bartlett OF Bobby Abreu OF Curtis Granderson OF Carlos Gonzalez DH Jermaine Dye Bench Mike Cameron Bench Brett Gardner
SP Cliff Lee SP Brett Anderson SP Chad Billingsley SP JA Happ SP Zack Duke SP Doug Davis RP Jose Valverde RP Bobby Jenks
I have a trade lined up to move Billingsley for some draft picks, as I'm without any picks in the 1st 3 rounds. (Made a run last year, lost out in the last week and finished 2nd.) My thoughts for now:
Must keeps: C Joe Mauer 2B Chase Utley OF Bobby Abreu OF Curtis Granderson
SP Cliff Lee SP Brett Anderson RP Jose Valverde
The rest, I'm torn on. Bartlett: Seems on the fence, but SS is always completely barren in the draft. Speed + decent OBP at SS makes him hard to pass on. Jenks: A 2nd closer would be the nuts, but he seems really iffy this year. Rotowire hates him, the Sox seem to hate him (true?) even though he gets it done every year. Carlos Gonzo: If he's the 25-20 threat he showed he was the 2nd half last year, he's a no brainer. Just how high are people on this kid? Is he more likely to platoon/struggle or is he really ready to break out? Haven't had any trade interest in him from rebuilding teams, which makes me think I might be overvaluing him potential?
Long post I know, but I'd be happy to return the favor for any who post their thoughts on any/all of my questions.
I would add Billingsley to your keepers. He's got big upside and if nothing else you can always trade him at the break if you think he'll suffer another second-half slide.
I don't mind paying for upside sometimes especially in a keeper so I would probably go with Gonzalez for your last one. I think Bartlett will regress some. I don't know much about Jenks' situation but if he ends up looking good for saves and you're making a bid for this year I might take him instead.

HOOTIE, I love Nick for his OBP too, but would you really keep him over Abreu? He too posts near .400 OBP as well. I also have Mauer and Utley as OBP guys (especially MAUER!) and have finished 1st or 2nd in OBP 3 years running. Bobby's near 100 rbi/runs and speed seem alot more useful. In a perfect world I'd keep 3/4 of my roster, but I think I need to drop Nick here.
I'm definitely not worried about a 2nd half slide with Billingsley (at least not more so than anyone else). The only reason I'm moving him is to grab two high picks. With 9x20 = 180 players already kept, if I don't pick for another 79 players (2nd to last in 4th round), that means my 10th player will have an overall rank of 259. If I'm going to compete this year I do need a couple high picks. I'm very high on Chad though, I hate to move him. :(
Consensus seems to be C. Gonzalez > Bartlett. I'm going to keeping trying to peddle Carlos, if no takers I guess I'll keep him and shop for a SS post-draft. And if I can peddle Carlos for picks, maybe I keep Billingsley. Some food for thought, thanks guys!
