Keepers? 1 More

Postby wags87 » Sun Feb 14, 2010 10:42 pm

Current Keepers:
Ryan Howard
Shane Victorino
Jayson Werth
Carlos Quentin
Ubaldo Jimenez
Dan Haren
Cole Hamels

One spot remains, but if I don't fill it then I get an earlier draft pick, so it might work out in my favor if the rest of the guys on my team are only marginal keepers...

Remaining Potential Keepers:
Miguel Montero (I don't think he's worth keeping)
Nick Swisher (on waivers)
Jason Bartlett (on waivers)
Chris Coghlan (reigning NL Rookie of the Year, possibly serious upside?)
Michael Young (He's a little old, is he really worth keeping?)
Brad Hawpe (Old, not going to do much, not really a realistic keeper)
Jorge De La Rosa (young, hard throwing, possibly serious upside?)
Joe Nathan (top closer, but only scores ~350 points a year, which is weak relative to a good hitter ~425+, or a SP @ ~500pts)
Scott Baker (Young, should be good, but I would rather let him go and get an earlier draft pick)

Of this group, I don't like any of them as options. Young and Joe Nathan are probably the finalists, but I want to hear opinions. Thanks!

I guess you have to ask yourself who of these would you take with that earlier pick. If none, then take the pick. If you have an OBP league, Swisher is not a bad idea. De La Rosa get's K's, but too many walks. Baker is not bad, too many HRs tho.

Also, what rounds are we talking, both scenarios???

Assuming you have to carry a closer, I'll say Nathan.

What gives a fantasy player value in any sport is the difference between him and other guys at his position. Closer might not score a lot of points for you in your format, but Nathan will likely score significantly more than most other closers.

Nathan, because if he only nets 350 in your league than the next tier closers must be 50 less than that, and so on.

If you can figure out who may be available on the draft, I might take the extra pick. Nathan though is the easy choice for your keeper spot. ;-D

I think you should take the first pick. Odds are most team won't do this so you will have your choice of first available. I think Nathan or Bartlett are your best choices as a keeper and you should be able to get one of them back.

I doubt you'd get much better than Nathan. There's a chance but if this is 12 teams or more and 7-8 keepers, Nathan should be at the top end of guys not being kept.
