Picking up prospects?

Postby Baldrick » Tue Feb 09, 2010 12:59 am

This team is in a 12 team H2H with no pick ups during the regular season (8 rounds of off-season drafting). Cats are 5x5.

I currently have my 7th and 8th (last two rounds for this year) picks left in the draft and I'm thinking of maybe picking up a couple of highly ranked prospects?

Had my eyes on Justin Smoak (1B, TEX) and Mike Stanton (3B, FLA). Would this be a wise move to pick up younger talent heading into the season or should I stick with what I have and say I'm finished with the draft?

Re-using my initial thread when I was asking who I should drop from previous rounds when I had left drops as TBD (to be determined).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

C: Jorge Posada
1B: Carlos Pena
2B: Kelly Johnson
3B: Hank Blalock
SS: Derek Jeter
OF: Adam Dunn
OF: Manny Ramirez
OF: Adam Lind
UT: Travis Snider

Bench:
Paul Konerko
Alberto Callaspo
Michael Bourn
Ryan Ludwick

SP: Gio Gonzalez
SP: Scott Feldman
SP: Jon Garland
SP: Trevor Cahill
RP: Brad Lidge
RP: Kevin Gregg
RP: Kerry Wood
RP: Shawn Marcum

Bench:
Jeff Niemann
Drew Storen
Kevin Slowey
Mark Buehrle

Pitching was never my teams strong point. I feel my batting can carry its own if players stay off the DL. Any help in the two players I should drop is greatly appreciated.

Baseball is not my strongest fantasy sport admittedly (I am a Canuck after all, ha ha).

Thanks.

Marcum and Capuano both offer nice bounce-back value coming off of their injury-lost seasons. Check out Capuano's K/BB in 06 was 3.7 and in 07 was 2.4 That's quite respectable and since he's only 31 it offers quite a bit of bounce-back value. Marcum had posted 2 straight years of 2.5 K/BB ratio before he lost 2009 to injury. He's only 28 and should be able to regain form this season since he did pitch MiLB rehab toward the end of last season.

I'd personally drop Feldman and Garland who offer poor skills and no upside.

You've actually got a pretty decent, if undervalued staff:

SP1 Kevin Slowey - should be good this year if healthy
SP2 Jeff Niemann - check out his 2nd half splits, he's finally arrived
SP3 Mark Buehrle - solid and consistent
SP4 Shawn Marcum
SP5 Gio Gonzalez or Capuano - Gonzalez has a fantastic K/9, especially for a lefty. He keeps the ball on the ground and just needs to improve his control to make a big jump in value.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.

Garland is in Petco, he should be decent. Capuano isn't in the rotation. Sounds like he's in the minors trying to prove he can come back. His velocity is down.

Might as well re-use this thread to inquire about further pick ups.

I currently have two picks left for the off-season draft.

I was wondering if I should leave my team the way it is or perhaps pick up a couple of prospects?

Personally I was thinking Justin Smoak and Mike Stanton. I suppose I am thinking of down the road as opposed to right now.

I have some good young talent I think and I'd like to grab some more before it's too late.

Again my specialty is not baseball (I am a Canuck so I follow hockey more), but that doesn't mean I am brain dead when it comes to baseball either. Much tougher to be in a league where you only get 8 rounds of drafting in the off-season with no other pick ups during the season (aside from trades).

Any help is greatly appreciated.
