I have Dominic Brown of the Phillies who can be kept outside of normal fantasy roster until he is promoted to the MLB at which time his contract would be $7.
He has Martin Prado, at $5 entering the second year of his contract
Salaries only increase in the third year of the contract with these choices:
3rd year of contract, keep at same salary but must release at the end of the year
add $5 to salary in 3rd year, keep for 3rd and 4th year
add $10 to salary in 3rd year, keep for 3rd, 4th, 5th year.
Any thoughts?

if I understand this correctly Brown is free until the Phillies promote him... well he's not going to be called up this year until the rosters expand in September. If this counts as a call up by your league and he'll cost you $7 going into 2011 you might as well deal him. I don't see him getting playing time (barring injury to a Phils OFer) until mid-2011 at the earliest. The Phillies are a contending team that isn't going to play a rookie if they've got players like Ibanez, Victorino or Werth.
If on the other hand, september calls up don't count (and I don't think they should...) then I would keep Brown unless your 2B options are very desperate.
Sept calls ups do NOT count. So yeah, if he stays in the minors all year, and then comes up after sept 1, 2011 becomes my first year (assuming he comes up then.)

Sorry if I wasn't clear. As long as he stays in the minors I can keep him indefinitely. The "clock" starts once he is called up by the phils. (Note: Sept call ups and less than 2 weeks in the big leagues doesn't count.)
Once he is called up here are the 3 possibilities for contracts:
$7, $7, $7, released
$7, $7, $12, $12, released
$7, $7, $17, $17, $17, released
The first two years are guaranteed at $7, and I don't have to make a decision about which of the three choices until the off season after the second year.
Its pretty clear his upside is better than Prado at $5, even though in an NL only Prado at $5 is a nice keeper. But with guys in the minors, the downside is that they don't pan out at all. You never know.
Am leaning to NOT doing the trade and holding onto Brown
