Trading Borbon in complicated keeper deal. WHIR

Postby plapre3 » Sun Jan 31, 2010 1:08 pm

After an action packed off-season I find myself with a final dilemma, and a complicated one with that. In my league you must keep 5 players and may keep up to 10, losing a pick in the draft for each guy after 5. I have 9 guys that I'm happy with, but I now need to decide if I want to deal for a 10th guy. My only remaining marketable chip is Julio Borbon, who is a free keeper (doesn't count as one of the 10). With a MDP of 212 (thanks rookies and cream!) he holds excellent value as he'd be kept at pick 375. The problem is that if I deal a free keeper for a true keeper, I not only lose the value in Borbon, but the opportunity cost of my current 1st pick in the draft: around pick 140 if you count everyone kept as a pick. Current guys that I might be able to nab (being conservative in my estimates): Ted Lilly, Kevin Slowey, Johnny Damon, Heath Bell,

However, I'm pretty worried about a potential weakness in my keepers that I'm light on pitching in a league in which pitching holds a lot of value.* Additionally, I'm worried that I might not have enough power, so dealing Borbon for a better power source might make sense. Given this, I'm weighing the following deals:

1) Matt Garza/ Wandy Rodriguez for my Borbon (and of course the opportunity cost of that last pick).
2) Carlos Gonzalez for my Borbon (and opportunity cost)
3) Carlos Quentin, Carlos Gonzalez, and Brian Matusz/Matt LaPorta for my Adam Lind and Julio Borbon

*Please review the league setup carefully, since it skews value of certain types or players a bit. In particular OPS, QS-L, and the fact that we start 5 starters and 3 relievers each week make a big difference. More importantly, we only keep 10 guys in this league and deals may at first seem lopsided, but it's really a pure study on opportunity cost, so please see my before/after keeper list below.

1) How'd I do?
I know that I overpaid, but that's the point when there's a cap on 10 keepers.
2) What should I do with the last keeper spot?
I can use it on Damon or Napoli (meh), take my chances in the draft (which should be pick 140 if you count everyone's current keepers as pick--I have Hanley so he's pick #2), or I can try and deal the last of my minors guys (F-Mart AND Borbon) for someone like Matt Garza or Wandy Rodriguez.

Offensive Categories: BA, OPS, RBI, HR, SB and Runs Scored. (Start: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF, UTIL)
Pitching Categories: W-L, S, ERA, K/IP, Quality Starts, and WHIP (Start: 5 SP, 3 RP)
6x6 weekly HtH 14 team roto keeper (between 5 and 10 keepers (no time limits or costs), losing a draft pick for each after 5)

Keepers:
Prince Fielder
Aaron Hill
Kevin Youkilis
Hanley Ramirez
Adam Lind
Bobby Abreu
Roy Halladay
Jon Lester
Joe Nathan
(Can deal for a final keeper or take pick 140 in the draft)
----------------
Minor Leagues:
Julio Borbon
Fernando Martinez
Lonie Chisenhall
Marc Rzepczynski
Jaff Decker

wow thats a pretty hard choice...im a pretty big fan of garza and wandy...short term its certainly an upgrade, but long term u lose a pretty decent sleeper of, the difference between wandy and lilly is decent sized gap. idk hard choice there. now personally im pretty big on carlos gonzalez...so option number 2 isnt bad but lossin the pick nd borbon is certainly overpaying for him. option 3 your probably overpaying too but like i said im huge on gonzalez, quintein isnt bad, and laporta has potential. if quinten was more of a sure hting id tell you to probably go with that. i dont think you leave yourself in a bad spot if you cant make a trade. idk how the minor league keeper thign works for borubon but if u can hold on to him for alittle id suggest that. if not trading for wandy or garza might be a good choice. i think they both have a chance to become almost elite...

I don't think I'd do any of them. Neither Wandy or Garza excites me and the other options don't blow me away. Borbon is a great sleeper and at pick #140, you can draft this year's sleeper SP if you do your homework.
Don't think meat it can only hurt the team

i wouldnt do any of those deals. i like julio borbon a lot this yr and seems like a good bet for .290-.300 90+ runs 30+ sb and he is a free keeper for you. all those other guys are in the same ballpark in value (like c-gon) but you'd have to pay that round difference which isnt worth it to me. keep borbon unless someone offers u something u cant refuse.

help with mine?
