Trimming Salary! WHIR!!!

Postby chargerss24 » Sun Jan 31, 2010 1:04 am

I'm in a 12-team, 6x6 roto (standard stat + holds/OBP) auction style keeper league. We get to keep as many players we can that are in our active lineup but have to remain under our $26 cap. First, here is my team:

C - Navarro (0.10)
C - Martin (1.30)
1B - Fielder (3.90)
2B - Pedroia (2.80)
SS - Andrus (0.80)
3B - Longoria (2.70)
MI - A. Cabrera (0.60)
CI - Votto (2.00)
OF - J. Upton (1.60)
OF - Rasmus (0.80)
OF - C. Gonzalez (0.70)
U - Adam LaRoche (1.00) *
U - Figgins (1.30) *
U - Willingham (0.60) *

SP - Santana (2.10)
SP - Greinke (2.60)
SP - Peavy (1.10)
SP - Jiminez (0.70)
SP - Price (1.00)
RP - Bell (1.60)
RP - Rivera (1.80)
RP - Thornton (0.80)
RP - Lowe (0.10)

Bench

SP - Bailey (0.10)
SP - Porcello (0.30)
SP - Arroyo (0.20)
RP - Gutierrez (0.10)

Now, my current active lineup totals a whopping $32.00, $6.00 over budget. Unless player values flectuate in my favor between now and Tuesday when our values lock down, I have a serious problem. I still have some time to work with my squad, have to have our lineups at/under $26 with a full active roster, or under $26 with active roster spots to fill. Players with an * next to them are players I will not keep, one way or another, so that saves me roughly $2.90 pending a trade. I'm looking at maybe moving Bell/Rivera for some cheap saves guys to save some more.

I guess what I want to know is, what moves would you make to get under $26.00 mark by mid-March? Any underated, flying-under-the-radar type of players you would look for that could save me some money? Leave a link and I'll help out!

WHIR!!!! ;-D

I'd let go of Martin,Price Thornton, Bell, Arroyo, Rasmus; maybe look to keep Figgy instead. Not really sure I'd pay that $ for either closer, maybe someone else would.

wow that is tough because you have a lot great players so your way over your limit. hard to gauge values and so forth but i'd look to deal/drop any of the following:

martin
fielder (i know he's a top 2-3 1b, but 3.90 seems so be an enormous outlier. especially when longo is 2.70. find someone cheaper that will be close to same production, maybe morneau or even if teix is a little cheaper)
pedrioa (i just dont see him more valuable then longo when he has a 20/20 CEILING. ur paying for the avg and runs. both which u can get cheap from someone like julio borbon)
laroche
figgins
santana
grienke (im sellin high if i owned him)
everyone on ur bench can be dumped, except try to trade porcello if you can, if not he could be a bargain at .30.

lots of good names there and its a shame you have to downgrade so much but you have to do wut u have to do to get down to 26. with all the value u are dealing away, i'd try to improve your MI and OF depth. also you'll have to bring in another starter if you deal an ace. team looks good though. i'd rather be way over budget with a great team, then be way under with a crappy team.

help with mine?

I think I've come up with a solution to trim salary from my team.

1. Trade Bell (1.60) and Rivera (1.80) for Francisco Cordero (.80) and Brian Fuentes (.90). That saves me 1.70. The owner who has those pitchers is considering the deal. Sidenote: Another owner has an interest in trading a Bobby Jenks (.70) to me in a deal for an SP.

2. Axe Figgins (1.30), Willingham (.60), and LaRoche (1.00). That saves me 2.90.

3. Trade Santana. Losing Santana saves me (2.10).

So, the three steps totalled up saves me 6.70 altogether. Take that from the 32.00 and my salary is now at 25.30. With that, here's what my team would look like:

C - Martin - 1.30
C - Navarro - .10
1B - Fielder - 3.90
2B - Pedroria - 2.80
SS - Andrus - .80
3B - Longoria - 2.70
MI - Cabrera - .60
CI - Votto - 2.00
OF - Upton - 1.60
OF - Rasmus - .80
OF - Gonzalez - .70
U - empty
U - empty
U - empty

SP - empty
SP - Greinke - 2.60
SP - Jiminez - .70
SP - Peavy - 1.10
SP - Price - 1.00
RP - Cordero - .90 (Could be a .70 Bobby Jenks)
RP - Fuentes - .80 (Could be a .70 Bobby Jenks)
RP - Thornton - .80
RP - Lowe - .10 (Could be a .10 Fernando Rodney)

Now, I can probably land Fernando Rodney pretty easily from another owner to handcuff Fuentes. I have Thornton, who is the top setup guy in Chicago, to handcuff Jenks should I make some sort of deal with the owner who has him. Anyway, as it stands, I have .70 available for three utility spots and one starting pitcher to spend on. I could keep Bailey or Porcello and still have money to spend on three utility spots. What do you think?

WHIR as always! ;-D

thanks for the help with mine.

i definately like your first plan. your downgrading your relievers for sure, but the downgrade in salary is def. worth it. plus fuentes/cordero are still solid RP. i dont like the idea of losing figgins for nothing. you should be able to package him with santana to lock up a few UTIL spots and a SP. i also believe you should deal fielder for a downgrade at 1b and a major upgrade at MI, i just dont see any value in cabrera whatsoever, but thats just my personal opinion so you could see somethin in cabrera that i dont, no biggie. overall the plan looks good. a few guys i would target, assuming they are cheap, are guys like julio borbon, gordon beckham (would be an outstanding, cheap MI), nolan reimold, possibly sean rodriguez if he gets the starting RF job and should only cost you .10 or so off the waiver wire. also, i think kelly shoppach is the starter over dionor navarro in tampa, but im not sure.
