We've played with the ISK(Insane Serial Killer) who is neither townie or mafia. We've played with the vigilante who is a townie but with the ability for his own night kill. We've played with Mafia Bosses who can have any number of abilities.
This game keeps getting better. Yes, more character depth would be awesome!
One thing I'd like is for it to be announced to everyone beforehand if the mafia know each other on day 1 or not. I was curious last game but I hate when people ask that to make themselves look innocent, so I just held off.

Yes, the mafia know who each other are at the start of the game.

Okay, well based on my total experience of 1 Mafia game, they know. I assume you could have them not know but then... how would they come to agree on a vote at night?
alright we have 9 signed up, seems like a good number to get going with. let's decide what roles we want to go with this time and then get the game started.

Sometimes they go Day 1 without knowing each other and then the mod tells them their partner during Night 1. The one time this happened to me I was lucky enough vote off my partner Day 1.
