Summary:

Britain sent 1400+ people (both sea-men and convicts ) to Australia in 1787.
They arrived at Botany Bay (part of Sydney) on 18-20 January 1788.
Botany Bay didn't live up to Captain Cook's glowing account, so they looked for another place to colonize and decided on Sydney Cove.
Australia Day is the "official" day that they planted a British flag at Sydney Cove, 26 January. Not the day they got here. Kinda stupid/disappointing.
