MLBTraderumors...Tigers Reach Agreement With Jose Valverde By Mike Axisa [January 14, 2010 at 3:41pm CST] The Tigers and free agent closer Jose Valverde have reached an agreement on a two-year deal, tweets Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports. The deal is worth $14MM, and includes an option for a third year. MLB.com's Matthew Leach tweets that the Cardinals, who were also connected to Valverde, "weren't going anywhere near that" price.
Valverde was the last remaining unsigned Type-A free agent. The Astros will receive two draft picks as compensation for losing Valverde: Detroit's first round pick (19th overall), as well a supplemental first rounder that will be 34th overall.
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that reliever Jose Valverde has signed a two-year, $14 million contract with the Tigers. The new contract reportedly includes an option for a third year at $9 million. The Tigers considered going with some combination of Joel Zumaya, Ryan Perry and Daniel Schlereth in the closer role, but they actually upgrade bigtime from Fernando Rodney here. Likewise, Valverde actually managed to do quite well for himself, given that the Tigers were the only realistic possibility for him to close. Because Valverde was a Type A free agent, the Tigers will surrender their first-round pick (19th). Jan. 14 - 4:41 pm et
So the Michigan economy is to blame for the loss of an All-Star fan-favorite center-fielder, but with no change in the economy we'll turn around and pay a closer the exact same amount that the fan favorite was owed? And also give up a first round draft pick? Sounds about right.
How insanely dumb, I don't understand the Tigers. First they have a fire sale, then they sign a FA closer for more money than they owed Granderson in 2010 & 2011& on top of that they forfeit their first round draft pick?
I mean seriously, what the balls? Maybe they have some big expectations for AJax.

I'm okay with the move (I love finally having a reliable closer, I'd just rather not lose the draft pick), I just don't understand how Dombrowski will justify it.
I don't know if Dombrowski actually said anything specific after the Granderson trade, but it was implied, at least by the media, that because of the economy the Tigers would be cutting payroll and that the Granderson trade was a part of that cutting of payroll. To spend that money a month later doesn't make sense to me. If I claim that I can't afford my mortgage anymore because of the economy and are therefore forced to sell my house it would be hard to justify going out and buying another house with the exact same mortgage.

How about a house with a bigger mortgage in a less valuable neighborhood?
