As Ken Rosenthal guessed last week, the Chicago Cubs are reportedly set to make a run at free agent pitcher Ben Sheets, the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan reports.

According to Sullivan, Cubs GM Jim Hendry contacted Sheets' agent during the Winter Meetings. Sheets is reportedly asking for two years and a guaranteed $10-12MM, though the Cubs believe "they have a good shot at landing him with an incentive-laden deal."

Wanting to get paid like you haven't missed 2009 = FAIL. :-t

This is just great. I mean, I have hated this guy for so long, dominating the Cubs and whatnot. Plus, he has been such a tease as far as being healthy. And now the Cubs are gonna throw a bunch a cash at the guy?
If he signs and doesn't get hurt, it can't hurt. But that is one big IF.

Are you kidding me? Harden cost Texas $7.5 million (plus $11 million option or $1 million buyout) and he didn't just miss a year. I mean, Sheets is better than nothing but come on.

Edit: is that $10-12 mil per year or total? If the latter, disregard the previous statement and I say ;-D

Edit 2:

Sheets reportedly has been asking for a two-year deal averaging around $10 million to $12 million per year

Sheets' fastball has improved but his curveball has divebombed since 2005 to the point where its actually a below average pitch. His K rate was 6.75 in '07 and 7.17 in '08. Add the fact that he's coming off an entire year lost to injury and we're looking at further regression.

But whatever, hopefully the Cubs staff will find if there's anything wrong and will be able to make a good judgment on his potential return (hint: this probably won't happen).
