Top 1B prospects! WHIR

Postby Xezus » Mon Jan 04, 2010 3:27 am

12 team H2H dynasty league

Hitters cats are R H HR RBI SB K E OPS

Smoak has already been taken so the next few on the list are as follows

Freddie Freeman 1B ATL

Lars Anderson 1B BOS (cant have him as just a DH though i need 1B eligible)

Eric Hosmer 1B KC

Yonder Alonso 1B CIN

Chris Carter 1B OAK

Logan Morrison 1B FL

I have Derrick Lee at first so i dont need these guys to immediantely produce at a MLB level, but possibly next year or 2 years

So if ya can gimme a quick ranking of them, i checked out a bunch of prospect rankings list, and they are all pretty different when it comes to 1B so i figured why not try out the cafe =)

Thanks! leave a link! WHIR :-D

Chris Carter stands head and shoulders above the rest for me.

Anderson struggled mightily this year, and would probably be at the bottom of my list.

Hosmer is a ways away, and considering he's playing in the low minors right now, you'd be relying entirely on his "tools."

Freddie Freeman doesn't excite me much, and I'd put him near the bottom with Lars, though just above, possible toss up with Hosmer with possible slight nod to Freeman given that he's faced higher competition.

Alonso and Morrison are pretty close to the same class IMO, but if I had to choose between the two I'd give a slight nod to Morrison. Morrison actually walked more then he struck out this year in Double-A (63:46) and displayed more HR power then Alonso. I also like that he's got clearer path to the Majors in Florida then Alonso in Cinci.

Back to Carter: I love his power potential, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't get a look in the second half in Oakland. He probably won't hit for the average that Alonso and Morrison do, but he'll hit for more pop.

Anyways, that's just my take. I'm sure others will view things a bit differently, as that's usually the case with prospects.

I would rank them this way:

Ackley (How can you forget about him) Best pure hitter of the group as well as best glove. Has the maturity and talent to come up mid season and never look back
Smoak
Carter Could be Ryan Howard or Dave Kingman. Will his patience continue to grow (Big gains last year) or will big leaguers devour him with junk.
Alonso------------Power is the question here
Logan Morrison--Again how much power does he pocess
Freeman----------Again how much power
Lars Anderson

I would definitely go with Ackley if he is available however he does not come without question marks himself. That question mark being will he stay at first or eventually move to CF.

You could also add Brett Wallace to the list... most scouts have said he's not going to stick at 3B and it's likely he moves to 1B or DH
I'd also look into Isaac Davis & Brandon Allen
Assuming Davis, Allen, Ackley and Wallace aren't possible I'd probably go

Carter
Freeman
Morrison
Alonso
Anderson
Hosmer

If they are available I'd go
Wallace
Carter
Ackley
Freeman
Morrison
Alonso
Allen
Davis
Anderson
Hosmer

wallace is already taken, and ackley is as well (also heard a rumor ackley is trying to learn 2b?) either way, those 2 guys aren't available.

So top 3 right now seems to be
Carter
Alonso
Morrison

maybe i can grab 2 of them in the next few rounds =P

Thanks for the help everyone!!!

Pedro Alvarez would be the best option if he cant stay at 3B, but otherwise I like Carter and Smoak best.

I agree with the three - Carter, Morrison and Alsonso. If Alveraz is available then he jumps to the front of the pack. Wallace and Carter would probably be on the same level.

But I would be looking that the best player and not a position if I were you. None of these guys are sure things and you can usually find other options later if you need to. Basically don't pick Alonso over a better player just because you want a 1B. You can always trade depth later on if you need to.

I'm going to second the opinion that with minor leaguers, you take the most talented guy regardless of position, and you maximize your trade value. So many things could happen between now and replacing Lee.

Still, I've got Carter ahead of many other prospects, so taking him is hardly a mistake.
