I play in a CBS H2H league, and we get to keep 5 players (no draft position replacement, you just keep 5 players from year to year). It’s a 10-team league, and I’m the league champion. My projected 5 keepers right now:
1B - Miguel Cabrera (lock) 1B - Ryan Howard (lock) OF - Ryan Braun (lock) SS - Troy Tulowitzski (lock) C- VMart
As you can see, I have two 1B, and we only play one and one DH. So my DH spot and 1B are set each week.
I like VMart as a keeper because of position scarcity of C.
However, I’ve been looking at the 3B in my league (a weak position this year), and I think I’ve figured out that all of the 3B studs but Pablo Sandoval will be kept as “keepers”, leaving only Kung Fu Panda as a top tier 3B (Zimmerman, Wright, ARod, Youk, Longoria, Reynolds will all be gone).
The Offer
An owner in my league has offered me A-Rod for VMart plus my first (I’ll be picking last as league champ) and fourth round draft picks.
Is locking up A-Rod worth giving up VMart plus whatever mid-tier dude I pick up in RD 4 plus someone a first rounder (after the 50 keepers are gone) like Ellsbury, Granderson, Peavy, or Cliff Lee.
You could still draft Figgins for 3B, since you say he won't be someone's keeper, granted you won't get A-Rod's HR and RBIs, but you have Howard, Braun, Tulo, and M-Cab so you're not really hurting in those categories.
First off there are plenty of decent 3B left such as Figgins or Aram. Saying that I think I would do this trade. I am not a big fan of VMart and locking up Arod would be very nice. Losing both picks could hurt but in a 10 team league I don't think it will effect you all that much. It is usually a good thing when you are getting the best player and I don't see this as being any different.

Looking at your group of keepers I like the deal. Also considering the fact you can seemingly keep these guys as long as you want, you'll really be glad you did this deal most likely going into 2011 as well. Not saying it's just a win later move, just stating it's icing on the cake. Being active on the wire should help you make up for the lost 4th rounder, and simply hitting some bargains will help make up for the lost 1st rounder. Being a 10 team league you'll see plenty of talent floating around, so take the best player and run.
I'd make the deal for A-Rod quite easily. Missing out on a first and fourth rounder is still substantial, but for A-Rod, this is a relatively small price to pay for him.
