Ethier for B.Roberts

Postby Diamond Miners » Sun Dec 20, 2009 5:32 pm

12 team league H2H points league
Batter points
+2 (each SB)
+1 (each base, bb, run, rbi) - which means a solo HR is worth 6 points.
-1 (each CS, K)
Pitching points
+9 (W, SV)
+5 (QS, Hold)
+1 (K)
-1 (ER)
-5 (BS, L)

Each offseason we can award one 4-year, one 3-year, and three 2-year contracts to get myself up to a max of 10 keepers. We can drop contract keepers as I likely will drop at least one of mine. Positions, we use the regular infield positions as well as CI and MI. 3 OF and two Util/DH. 10 pitchers (doesn't matter SP or RP). The points seem to favor strike out pitchers, FYI. That being said, pitching is still questionable as it is in every league. Top pitchers fail, ones drafted in the late rounds becomes surprise studs.

I won the league last season and my current contracts look like this:
C Martin (2 year), 1B Pujols (2 year), CI M.Cabrera (2 year), OF Holliday (2 year), P Johan (2 year), P Kershaw (3 year), P K.Rod (1 year).

That's 7 contracts, but I'll likely drop Martin back into the draft, which means I need to give 4 contracts to the following:
Bats: A.Ethier, G.Beckham, K.Morales, H.Pence, Span, Scutaro, A.Cabrera, Polanco
Pitchers: J.Shields, De La Rosa, Arroyo

To note, we get two minor league keepers and mine are C.Santana and Strasburg.

I was figuring to take a chance and give Beckham a 4 year deal. Either Morales or Ethier a 3 year, the other a 2 year. And keep J.Shields as my final keeper under a 2 year contract.

I'd really like to trade Morales since he'd get slotted at Util as I already have Pujols and M.Cabrera at 1B and CI. But I haven't found any takers yet (1B is deep and Morales is currently at the bottom of the top 12-15 but still projected around 430 points. 400 is usually considered a low end keeper with upside.

Here's the kicker, with the last pick of the first round (#12) and the first pick the second round I think I'm looking at my pick of outfielders. I'm assuming the first 11 picks are (not in order): Lincecum, Felix, Halladay, Papelbon, Nathan, Rivera, Lackey, Vazquez, Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez, and Jered Weaver (he's projected slightly above 500 points). That would leave the following for me to pick from:

Ichiro, Carlos Lee, Granderson, Manny, or McCann. 3 guys who are aging, one who can not seem to hit lefties, and a top catcher. Hence why I'm thinking about trading Ethier as well. I could grab two OFs with my first two picks and end up with Holliday, Granderson/Ichiro and Carlos Lee. Or I could keep Ethier and draft one OF and McCann. My bats would be pretty solid but my pitching VERY light with only Johan, Shields, Kershaw and F.Rod going to my 3.12 pick and 155 players off the board.

The guy that has Brian Roberts is looking for OF help and wants a deal centered around Ethier. Roberts is similar to Ethier in the fact that I can give him any length of contact I wanted. Although he is 32 and a 2 year contract puts him at 34 years old.

Question 1: Should I trade Ethier for B.Roberts?
Question 2: If not, who would you give the 3 year contract to? Ethier or Morales?

Sorry for the long post, but looking forward to whatever feedback you want to leave.
Thanks!
Good luck, feel free to PM me

As for the FA OFs, I'd take Ichiro and Granderson before I took Carlos Lee or Manny, Granderson will rake in Yankee Stadium due to RF and Ichiro is well...Ichiro.

Yes, I would make that trade. I like Roberts with a 2 year deal, Morales with a 3 year and Shields with a 2 year.

Players like Roberts, that largely rely on their legs, usually don't age well. I'd keep Ethier but I'll let you decide who to extend.

I would definitely trade Ethier for Roberts but if you don't do the trade I would give the contract to Morales. I think he has more upside and is a stud. And he will be 27 this year.
